Just thinking while listening to Play The Game. Always found it hard to believe that and Need Your Loving Tonight failed to hit the US top 40 following a huge #1!
Anyone have any thoughts as to why? I imagine the intro and the middle put people off a bit on PTG.
Any thoughts as to what should have been released as a single instead? The Game or any album wise...
I'd have put out NYLT after CLTCL and Dragon Attack after AOBTD.

Good point. Bizarre that Need Your Loving Tonight didn't become a hit - don't know if it didn't get any airplay because it was more straight rock single and the stations wanted more 'soul/pop' type stuff like ....Dust?
It's one of my favourites actually - simple structure really but great solo

Well it did not have a "short promotional film" i.e. "music video". I guess when it comes down to it it just was not promoted. Maybe it also did not get airplay. It also could be that the hit singles ahead of it in particular "Another One Bites The Dust" encouraged the public to go and purchase the entire studio l.p. of "The Game" which aside from making money is also what the purpose of many singles have been. To promote the l.p. that it is from or what ever assuming that it is not a stand alone single. I'm just hypothesising here.

Well not only that I was also wondering for other albums what people would have released instead of what the band actually released.

I also dont understand that. I really like that song. Killer guitar solo! Live versions rocked and sounded better without the acoustic guitar in the mix. But with a harder guitar on the single version and a video. That could have done it maybe

'You and I' should have been a single. Most of the time Queen got their singles spot on, but not releasing 'You and I' as the follow-up to 'Somebody to Love' was unforgivable.
Also, 'Back Chat' should have been released as the lead single from Hot Space, followed by 'Las Palabras', then 'Calling All Girls', then 'Staying Power'.

Great songs of Johns - Spread Your Wings and Need Your Loving Tonight (plus You & I that should've been) that never really hit the singles charts - a real oddity when they are superb tracks, released in eras when they were a massively successful singles band. Still, he got his royalties ok with ....Dust and ..Break Free!!

Flick of the Wrist needs more love, but i understand they didn't release it, having ''Now i'm Here'' and ''Killer Queen''

Off The Game I'd say Coming Soon. Fantastic slice of new wave that would surely have done well.

Hey, this must be the first time someone suggests this in 15 years I've been reading this forum... yes, it's been THAT long!
I can't say I disagree. They might have gotten away with it... OR it would have tanked and today we would be saying "They should have released Need your loving tonight instead. That one would have been a smash hit!".
I don't know. Were promo videos really THAT important back then? Another one bites the dust was a hit because Black/R&B radio stations picked it up. I don't think the video had that much to do with it, but I wasn't even born so what do I know? :)

See, if they had put more non-album b-sides on the singles I think that would have helped too because more fans would have bought the singles. Though speaking from experience if I liked both sides of the single I would buy it just to have it.
overall, I would say White Queen, you and I, if you can't beat them and put out the fire.

i thing that the singles didn't have marketing in our time
