I know we all want a demo/rarities compilation and the blue ray/dvd of the early 70s gigs but why has QPL not given us the rock in rio show on blue ray? It would surely fit in well between queen on fire and the budapest/wembley 86 shows. :)

Blu Ray is a storage medium - it can easily be presented on a Blu Ray disc (albeit in DVD quality) which will allow room for more extras

God, please, no.

While the atmosphere was great, the show itself is pretty mediocre. The worst drum sound Roger ever had.

Indeed - agree that the drum sound is not good on the Rio VHS. In fact every show I have heard officially recorded from that tour (Japan, Sydney, Rio) is the same, and it must be a combination of the metal Ludwig shells which bizarrely he seemed to leave with the factory fitted Ludwig 'Rocker' skins on, and the way they recorded and mixed it at the time. The decision to incorporate so much electronic pad work (AOBTD?!!!) was a grave error too.

However, if you listen to the 'Rock In Rio Blues' that was remixed for the 'A Winter's Tale' CD single, the drums sound really really good, as does the guitar which is also poor on the original mixes from that time. Therefore if they were to work on Rio as a complete release it is possible that they can produce a new mix from the multi track that remedies the problems.

Having said that, they also remixed 'It's A Hard Life' from Rio for the recent remasters bonus tracks, and swamped the drums in reverb and what seems like delay in places. and, whilst they were 'fuller' than the VHS mix, it was not a patch on the 'Rock In Rio Blues' effort.

Really inconsistent work on their part, which is sadly par for the course.

To be honest, I have maybe seen once the official VHS, and once the first complete (and the second incomplete) night and I really don't think I will watch any of these videos again in the near future :-)

Blue Ray - Well this is blue ray : http://www.myconfinedspace.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/blue-ray-charles.jpg

If you meant Bluray, the show can't be released at full HD resolution.
Or actually it CAN, but the shows were shot at 480i and it's a huge problem to convert them to 1080p and not make them look like shit. An upconverted video always looks like an upconverted video and not as good as something which was shot in HD or on film.

Or of course they could release the SD video (480i) on Bluray, but I can't imagine why would they do it.

It's just NOT worth converting to HD or using blu ray for theextra space. Absolutley no benefit at all. DVD media is much cheaper and SD is more than enough for 480i video and DD audio.

I don't think there's much left shot on film in the archives to warrant another BD release (?)

I don't think the Blu-Ray standards even ALLOW for 480p/i releases.

I'm pretty sure they do https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-ray_Disc#Video - almost every BD I own has SD special features

Get the Final Live In Japan DVD to fit in between Queen On Fire and Wembley & Budapest shows - it's not complete but there are good renditions of Impromptu and Jailhouse Rock. Y'know, thinking about it, that tour was not that good. TIU didn't really work as a opener and they quickly went into TYMD anyway - almost as if they knew it but wanted to start with something from the new album. It was good to hear L again but GKR? and no-one goes to a Queen concert to hear a Spike Edney keyboard solo. It was nice that they tried IAHL but Freddie often didn't seem able to sing it and AOBTD was bad on this tour as others have mentioned.

There's some standout shows here and there, but I generally agree with you.

The first show of the Works tour had the 'normal' AOBTD and some other minor differences.

To me, it's a forgettable tour (and album). It did bring them back, though.

From the bits seen on "Days Of Our Lives" / "Great Pretender" documentaries and the Bonus tracks on "The Works" 2011 Universal release, it seems that the whole Rock in Rio shows have been remastered and remixed, so let's hope that Queen Productions some day agree to re-release it.

Who knows if they remastered the entire shows, or only the bits and pieces the intended to use
