I've been a reader here for about a year now, and I love it. I love this forum quite a bit, but I've never really posted. But I feel like this is a good site to come to. I am 17 years old, and last Thursday I came out on Facebook as bisexual. I was inspired by Freddie Mercury. He's my idol, my inspiration. I've received so much support! My mom didn't see me until late the next day, so she left me a letter. This letter has over 80,000 likes on Facebook, has spread to Twitter and Reddit, and gay.net recently published it as their leading news story. I've been touched by all the support I've received, and I would love to share it with all of you.

This is fabulous. And hey! George Takei shared this letter on Facebook. How cool is that? Go you!

You and your mom should be proud. Though a serious topic, I admit her letter had me giggling at the end :)

It's spread everywhere! All over the world, my mom's letter to me has gone viral. I'm just in so much shock. And it all spread everywhere (yahoo.com did it as a headlining story) on Freddie's birthday. How ironic!

"It's spread everywhere!"

Btw Zach - I shared your letter on FB. I thought it was great how your mum was being supportive yet funny at the same time. This must've made you feel more at ease, and was a nice touch. It didn't matter to her about your "coming out" - the messy room troubled her more. Nice :)

Yeah that's one supportive mom.
Can i ask something - is "gay" considered a derogatory term?

Good question.
Even over a couple of years, I've seen some terms go in and out of vogue. We're at the point now where progressive internet types are using the term 'person of colour', which really - and I'm not kidding - grates upon my nerves the same way it would if I drove through Harlem with my window rolled down shouting --*YOU KNOW WHAT*--'s.

The same silly process takes place with names for the mentally handicapped. When "retarded" (literally "held back") became offensive, the Dutch went for "mentally disabled", but that is now considered offensive, so the nutjobs in the field of care for the disabled now demand we call them "people with possibilities", which is frankly insulting to everyone who ISN'T mentally handicapped.
