Any idea if there is an actual person who influenced these lyrics?
I know he was with Mary at the time.
I am wondering if this is just one of Freddie's songs that he wrote more for experimentation, like Bo Rhap, in which he said the lyrics were not important-it was the song structure he was after.
Is this song like that or has anyone read/heard about an inspiration for the lyrics?

In one of the documentaries on Freddie, it may have been one titled, The Loves of Freddie Mercury (I think), David Minns was Freddie's boyfriend during the Day at the Races period and even claims that Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy was written about their relationship. I agree with the above poster that YTMBA was written about him.

I'm sure, that YTMBA was inspired by Mary. It was the direct follower to 'Love Of My Life' (which was definitely dedicated to Mary). A very sad song, predicting the end of relationship...

In contrast to 'Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy' - an upbeat song, that could be inspired by the current romantic relationship.

It wasn't.

That doesn't prove they're both about the same person.

Not necessarily.

Two different songs can be about the same person, just like two similar songs can be about different people.

Sebastian, there's NO definite proof, that YTMBA was not dedicated to/inspired by Mary.

Is David a credible source or did he make an assumption that it was about him?
I feel that it is NOT about Mary only because the emotions behind the song seem so intense, so longing as though he is speaking about someone he can't have, or someone that just left him. And I don't mean Mary because although he loved Mary I don't think he felt this intensity with her.
Or maybe it is just speaking of the love he had hoped to find somewhere, sometime and how he imagined it would be.
I just love the song, although it tears my heart into a million pieces.

There's no definite proof it was, either.
For that matter, there's no definite proof that it wasn't dedicated to or inspired by, say, Kevin Keegan, or Caligula, or Madonna, or Paul Rodgers.
There's not a single interview with Freddie saying 'I didn't write that song about [insert name here]', therefore it categorically proves he did... apparently!

can't believe this is up for debate.
Freddie made it quite clear that You Take My Breath Away was dedicated to Hippocrates....for being the first to diagnose Asthma :-)
