Some sites claim it's a fake rumour, other sites (incl. wikipedia) claim he died today. Anybody knows the truth?

All sources point to a Rolling Stone article http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/lou-reed-velvet-underground-leader-and-rock-pioneer-dead-at-71-20131027, but it seems to be correct, a number of news(paper)-websites have already picked it up http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2477902/Lou-Reed-rock-n-roll-pioneer-dead-71.html http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/music/music-news/10407726/Lou-Reed-dies-aged-71.html http://www.aljazeera.com/news/americas/2013/10/report-musician-lou-reed-dies-at-71-201310271736483837.html

That's really sad news. News of his liver transplant had me worried a few months ago, but this is still a really nasty shock. I really love his music, so it's really sad that there isn't going to be any more of it...RIP Lou Reed, but I'm really grateful for the music he gave us all!

Unfortunately true. Reported earlier on TV via BBC news. A really sad day indeed. I'm quite a fan of the VU, and like a fair bit of his solo work too: admittedly, his vocals were weak live, but his music is so, so important - notably the influence it had on a certain Mr. Bowie. 71 aint old these days, either. Sad, sad news.

yes. sad but true. the guy that helped influence so many musicians is no more.

last update: Lour Reed meets St Peter at Pearly Gates, St Peter asks "what you doing here?"
Lou Reed replies "I, I'm waiting for the (son of) man"

That's all because the younger generation couldn't care less of all the great musicians that used to make great music in the past.

They are much more interested in nowadays shit. I'm not saying that there isn't any good music anymore now, but the majority of it isn't any good to say the least (IMHO, of course).

I'm 17 but I do know what's right and what is not, regarding music itself.

However, sad but true.

But what I would also like to add is that there are lots of mature and middle-aged people on here, so why there is so little feedback is beyond me.

in a way, i agree with you. but it's not quite that simple.
there's always been plenty of shit and good music - in EVERY decade.
the difference these days is that it's all instant. mp3s and itunes etc etc make the process of anticipation and waiting for a new release an anti-climax. the 80s changed things really - they created an impatient "now generation" who demanded everything "yesterday" - the 90s and it's bastard love-child- the Interweb reinforced this notion and gave the demanding grabbing hands a way to get stuff instantly... and it'll never ever be the same again.

think about it: in the 60s/70s a good album could be in the charts for a year - these days EVERY FUCKER and his uncle has it downloaded within a week of release - and by the second week they're looking for their next "fix"

unless we get some kind of "Revolution" style - "someone turned off the power" scenario those halcyon days are gone for good....

ps - wasn't the season 2 opener of Revolution good - if for nothing else than the "hill-billy" arrangements of Crazy Train, Smoke O Tnhe Water and Tom Sawyer ?

When he got the liver transplant, everyone kinda knew the writing was on the wall. Decades of alcohol abuse will give you an expiry date.

A true innovator. RIP.
