In the sleeve notes of metallica cover versions album "garrage inc" they refer to the featured stone cold crazy as "a no brainer" is this because they found it musically simple to perform or because they are queen fans and had to have a track on their album? I know hetfield performed scc at the tribute so maybe that gave them the idea to use it? Any thoughts?

"A no brainer" as in people should know who originally created the song

In normal context, "no brainer" means it is an obvious decision to make, ie, whether they should cover it or not, they liked the song, it was their kind of music,it would be great on the album, everything points to its inclusion, its a no brainer!

Metallica had recorded and released SCC before the tribute concert.

- the idea to use it surely did not come because of the tribute concert, as they had already recorded it in 1980s, and had also released it as the b-side of "Enter Sandman". Possibly this gave brian/roger the idea to invite them to perfor at the tribute concert :)
- i think its a no-brainer becos metallica won a grammy for their cover of stone cold crazy so it had to be included in any album of covers they make.

They recorded it for an Elektra compilation album Rubáiyát in 1990(or 91?). The goal was that "new" musicians on Elektra label will record cover versions of artists who used to be on Elektra label in the past. Queen was the only band of the list which all Metallica members liked, so they choosed to play one of their songs, and after some chosing they chose Stone Cold Crazy. The song was VERY successful (didn't they win a "best heavy metal song"-type award for it?), so Brian asked them to open the tribute concert and playing SCC with them

SCC appears as B-side on Metallica's Enter Sandman CD-single from 1991 (Vertigo 868 733-2)
