A good 46664 video on this site and just a few good tribute songs.

I'd like to ask everyone to respond to the topic in the Personal forum. As much as I regret Mandela's passing, this topic does not belong in Queen - General Discussion.

Ok sorry, but this is sad information...

It bloody well does, due to the obvious connection.

To make it Queen-related - have there ever been credits released for The Call/Invincible Hope? I've always wondered how involved Brian and Roger where with each others tracks.

We all know Queen didn't give a shit about breaking boycotts, and acted like complete capitalist assholes by playing in Sun City in '84. That was wrong. And no rationalising and pseudo-philosophising after the fact by Brian and Roger will change that.
Brian cares more about the God-damn badgers now than he did about the suffering and injustices suffered by the "blacks" and "coloureds" back then. Ok - not playing there wouldn't do shit to help those people - but by playing there, they basically said "Fuck what's going on, we don't care about politics", which should really read "Fuck you, you black, you coloured, we don't give a shit about showing the world we are against the extremely serious abuse you suffer."

Surprised to see the tracks being credited to Taylor/May - the only occurence besides Machines and Thank God It's Christmas I think? But I was talking more about the performers on the recordings. Who played bass/keyboards/etc?

Nope! They did the right thing - well, half of the right thing. I might've been more impressed if Freddie had shouted 'fuck Apartheid' in the middle of the show or something. As it stands, just going to the gig and playing there is too much of a non-act to really count one way or the other.
Bottom line, it's simplistic babble to say they were supporting apartheid just by being there. it's the kind of low level thinking worthy of Hall & Oates - do you really want to be affiliated with those losers?
PS. RIP Nelson, the curse of Brian strikes again

Taken at face value, part of the agreement was that they would be playing in front of mixed audiences. Music crosses bouneries, a RT once said. Well yes it does if those in power give it room and a chance too.
If people are willing to stand against the Bands decision to play there, then maybe they should point the finger at the millions of people who used to travel to South Africa on holiday or to visit relatives and in so doing pump millions into the country and Government of the time. And also for some to use that country as a hunting ground to destroy wildlife.
Queens actions may have been seen as questionable by some, but just maybe the bands decisions came from a good place away from the political unrest. And in the larger picture the fact they played there did nothing in real terms to suport or help the South African government .

Frankly, it's transparent P.C posturing for anyone to put the boot into Queen for the Sun City trip. It smacks of a kind of intellectual cowardice; like you said, it's all well and good to go after Queen for ignoring the boycott, but why doesn't anyone talk about all of the other ways that people were passively supporting apartheid simply by not doing enough to speak out against it? I think I'd have more true admiration for the band if they'd done something gutsy like actually speak out against the whole thing while they were onstage, but oh well.
It's all a lot of nonsense. Get over the Sun City gig, you ninnies. it didn't hurt anyone. That mixed crowd got to see more Queen than I ever will, so if you ask me they did a good thing by going.

Boycotting an apartheid country is always the best action. Profit for the concert in part would have gone to the white
imperialists and not to those who needed it, blacks. That Brian gratefully calls Mandela "forgiving" may hint to
a bit of uncomfortable guilt. OTOH, Freddie was a survivor of Africa's turmoil. Queen may have aproached their
engagement through a different lens.
