What PC would you suggest for video editing?

A couple of days ago my old 400w PSU died. And I decided it's time to build a new rig since my PC is almost 5 years old and even back when I bought it, it was no monster. Using for example After Effects on it was almost ridiculous.

So I am calling all the PC gurus here. What parts (brands, specifications) do you think would be suitable for decent video processing? I'd like to spend no more than about 700€ for the whole thing. Well, I still gotta save up for that and by the time I get to buying the stuff, things will change, but I would like to get some overall picture now regardless.

So far I thought Asrock Z77 Pro3 motherboard and Intel Core i7-3770 processor would be fine. Also 16gb RAM.

Any response would be appreciated :-)

Well I can just tell you what I've got :-)

Case - Fractal Design R4 Black ( I opened the case for the first time after 4 months, no sign of dust anywhere!)
Processor - Intel i7-4770S
Motherboard - Asus H87 PRO
System disc - Samsung SSD 120GB 840 (I would recommend an Intel)
Data disc - 2 x 2TB WD Caviar BLACK joined in a RAID-0 field
RAM - 2x Kingston HyperX Blu 8GB 1600 Class10

I definitely can't complain :-)

if you want to do video editing that doesn't require you leaving your PC on overnight to render your movies
you'll need three basics:

best processor you can afford/your motherboard can take
as much ram as your board can take
very large hard drive - sometimes it's worthwhile partitioning it so that the once partition is used just for videos

I have some slight experience building budget (~$600) gaming rigs for my family, and I just noticed that you did not mention a video card? Are you considering a separate graphic card instead of integrated graphics?

My son uses a five year old computer with a cheap 64 bit AMD processor and 4 MB memory for video editing of video game footage for YouTube, and he seems to be doing ok.

I suspect a moderately priced separate video card (~$100)) would significantly boost the performance of your otherwise highly powered video editing computer rig.

Just a thought ...

i'm sure that ^^^ must be a typo? unless he's only editing 17 seconds of video? :-)

"Fractal Design R4 Black"

Seconded, it's a fantastic thing.

Far as video editing goes, I still use my 2009 iMac because it's where all of my crap is and I'm just used to the programs. If I have a long render or export to take care of I hand it over to the PC I built.

my current video editing setup:

Packard Bell iMedia S2870
500gb h/drive
8 gb ram
intel i3 - 3220 (CPU)
radeon sapphire hd6670 (igb) GPU

and not only does it manage video editing quite nicely
it also plays DayZ - pretty good too - no lag/no crashes
- i think a game like DayZ (big wide open maps) is a good test of your system
