Johnny Flynn Joins Ben Whishaw in Queen Biopic 'Mercury' as Roger Taylor

British actor and musician Johnny Flynn, 30, has nabbed the role of drummer Roger Taylor in Dexter Fletcher‘s upcoming Queen biopic “Mercury,” according to a report by The Daily Mail.

“Mercury” will follow the original formation of the legendary rock band – which consisted of frontman Freddie Mercury (who will reportedly be played by fellow up-and-coming British actor Ben Whishaw), guitarist Brian May, bass guitarist John Deacon, and drummer Taylor – all the way through to the group’s famous Live Aid performance in 1985.

The film, which is being scripted by Peter Morgan (“The Queen”), has gone through quite a long casting development. Sacha Baron Cohen was originally announced to play the role of Mercury back in 2010, but dropped out in July due to creative differences. Although Whishaw’s casting has never been officially announced, he’s been attached to the project ever since he was revealed in an interview with BBC’s “The One Show” to be the band members’ choice to play the part. As for the casting of the other band members, Robert Pattinson’s name has previously been brought up for the role of May.

Flynn’s star is on the rise this year. In between working with his band, the Sussex Witt, he played opposite Anne Hathaway in Kate Barker-Froyland’s music drama “Song One” (which debuted at this year’s Sundance Film Festival) and Chloe Moretz in Olivier Assaya’s “Clouds of Sils Maria “ – both of which are likely to be released this year.

I can see why. Hope his acting gives as much credibility to the role :)

Wow! He is hot and cute! He looks like he would fill the role greatly!

I think it would be funny if Roger played Roger and Brian played Brian. You know they want to be asked.

While this is by no means perfect, it is better than all the other things suggested to date.
At least there is some plausibility to him in the role.

Like most people, I've never seen him in anything, which might be a good thing as there is no prejudice nor troll outrage. On the other hand, there is less posts and less discussion.

So this guy is a musician and kinda looks the part. Has anybody seen him in anything?

When is the movie coming out?
Typically, for hugely anticipated movies (this might not be one of them, to be honest) cast pictures get released a few months before the movie's release to generate buzz. Any idea when we might see the first pic of Ben as Freddie Mercury? and the rest of the cast for that matter?

I'm still sad Rylan Clark off X Factor isn't playing Freddie.
