Queen
Live in Yokohama Bunka Taikukan,
Yokohama, Japan
April 30, 1975
One of the first Queen gigs in Japan, filled with a couple of surprises and funny moments. The band are not very well together during the beginning of Ogre Battle. Freddie introduces Son And Daughter as a song the audience should now, because they've seen it recently on television. Since the songs doesn't have a promo video, he must mean
a live version. Did Japan TV show Son And Daughter from one of the Rainbow concerts before their visit? Can anybody confirm it? Also a nice addition to the setlist is Great King Rat, which is pretty rare to hear live. Roger introduces Seven Seas of Rhye as "a number by HIM,
written by HIM". Freddie introduces Stone Cold Crazy with "This is called Sh.... (silence) Stone Cold Crazy" - did he want to introduce Sheer Heart Attack?
The main source for this merge was an old recording taped by the legendary Japanese taper known only as "Mr. Peach". A few years ago he donated a collection of his tapes
to a bootleg company called Tarantura. The folks at Tarantura then remaster it, or "try" to remaster it, and release a few professional Queen bootlegs each year.
There is one HUGE problem with their bootlegs, or to be more precise with their remastering process. For some weird reason the person responsible for the remastering,
even though he claims to be a professional sound engineer, he ruins the recordings with extreme loudness and compression. The result - always when I forget how these CDs sound like, and I put one of them in my CD player, I experience a big shock. I usually have to run to the speakers and lower the volume as low as possible so that
I'm actually able to listen to it without having to be afraid that I'm gonna damage my ears or my equipment :-)
There are also some other problems with this recording. The show was taped on 90 minutes tapes (SONY C90) so Mr. Peach stopped after each roughly 40 minutes for a
tape flip. We lose two precious parts - the first one is just a part of Freddie's speech. Unfortunately it's exactly the part of the speech which suggests, that Japanese fans could recently see Son And Daughter. The second one is more painful, we lose the last approx. 1 second from Liar, Brian's speech and a surprisingly long segment of In The Lap Of The Gods ...revisited. Two segments actually, which is even more surprising - could Mr. Peach have problems with his equipment? The funny thing is that we miss a part of a song, but we get 2 times the audience cheering between
the encores :-) Another problem is a surprisingly high ammount of hiss, especially in the quiter parts.
Fortunately for us an alternate source exists. The quality is much worse, it's incomplete and all we have is a youtube rip, so it's lossy, but luckily this alternate source has a full version of In The Lap Of The Gods ...revisited.
I have taken the main source, and tried to re-remaster it. I opened each track in good old Cool Edit Pro and used "restore clipped recording". That made the songs sound much more pleaseant to my ears, I don't know if YOU will like it, but I did this for myself, and I DO like it :-) Also, on a couple of tracks a small hiss reduction was done, on the worst sounding parts. Again, I'm no Stark, so don't be too harsh about these changes, if you don't like them, the original bootleg is really easy to find online. The last second of Liar and the missing parts of In The Lap of the Gods ...revisited were patched from the alternate source using
cross-fades instead of cuts. Also the repeating material between discs 1 and 2 was minimized.
