I remember when I was younger and not a Queen fan, a lot of people around me always commented on how this Freddie Mercury guy looked really ugly, which was weird because the more I looked at photos and videos of him, the more I realized how physically beautiful he actually was, especially in the 1970s. back then, Freddie had those razor sharp cheekbones, dark mysterious eyes and big eyelids, aristocratic nose, plump limps and beautiful olive skin... in my opinion, these are some features that most women and men would kill for. what's there to be ugly? I don't even think his teeth were as bad as most people make them out to be, which are obviously the first thing people notice all the time because they see Freddie singing with open mouth on photos and videos and okay yeah, he certainly did not have the best teeth but he didn't have the worst teeth either! just a few extra ones and that's it. to me this is probably the best photo that captures Freddie's exotic beauty from the early days

at times he looked very mysterious and evil but that's what was so striking about his face features. when you look at someone like young Roger, he was sweet and cute looking but Freddie was the one whose looks were really mesmerizing.
I guess it just depends if you're more used to 1970s Freddie or 1980s Freddie, because these are like two completely different people when it comes to physical appearance. and it's obvious that Bob Geldof was reffering to Live Aid Freddie, where all of his beautiful features I mentioned above were overshadowed by his massive teeth and sweaty mustaches. I agree that clone look didn't help him but underneath it all, Freddie certainly was a handsome man

I think it's a British thing. I remember some quick video bit from the Champions of the World documentary. Some band gets interviewed and says "what's his name? ... the ugly one" (referring to Freddie)
Eh each to his own opinion. Personally I'm with Eddie Murphy when he said that rock and roll was cool cause you don't even have to be good looking to get laid. Just look at Mick Jagger.
Haha.
It's got to be some bit of xenophobic/outsider opinion, causea lot of Brits see Brian, John and Roger as being the good "British boys".
World's greatest mug has got to be Pete Townsend.
"Real good looking boy"
Anyways, funny thread. Non-gay, just saying. Freddie wasn't "ugly"

I really love that pic. One of my favourites. And I totally agree with your opinion. Roger is (was, actually) super cute and good looking, but there wasn't that special something that kept your eyes glued to him.
I know I have added this link on another topic, but I really think we should send it to Geldof. To me, the look on the girl's face at 3:54 says it all! That is Freddie's magic!

Freddie in the 70s and 80s had the magnetic looks to capture the eye, he was the regal member in Queen
he gave the band that magical flavour and thats what Queen was all about, being majestic, royal, regal,
i do not think freddie was ugly at all, that is just Geldof been a twat, as usual, because Mercury had more talent in his little finger than Geldof ever had.
Mercury was massive in japan because he had the oriental looks to some extent than the other 3 guys in Queen, so he fitted in beautifully.
Personally my favourite Freddie era was 1976 /1977.

That comment of Geldof's bothered me as well. I think Freddie was incredibly handsome. He had an unusual look and he had no bad phase from what I've seen. I didn't even mind the clone look. However, my favorite look was with the beard like in the "I Want it All" video.

I also like the beard the best. Not one moment was Freddie less than exquisitely beautiful.

That comment bothered me too... When I first got into Queen I remember not being especially taken with Freddie, but then at some point a switch flipped. I think the "clone" look is alright, my favorite era is late '70's when he got his hair cut fairly short but didn't have the mustache yet, around Jazz and The Game. The transition when he started wearing leather but still wore ballet shoes was great. '76 is probably my least favorite of the glam phase (I spent way too much time thinking about this). But yeah, Freddie's pretty gorgeous and I love all of his incarnations.

I personally think Freddie looked the best in 1986, especially around the time of Queen's legendary concert at Wembley

Freddie is like an old friiend. You don't sit and talk to your old friends and wonder if they're attractive or not, you just enjoy their company.I cannot think of a human being that I like as unattractive.
