if you could pick any one band and FIVE songs by them that you like and were NOT hits and are perhaps tucked away in the back catalogue - but also define that band...what would they be?

I'll kick it off with a bit of a guilty pleasure:

Status Quo
Accident Prone
Dirty Water
Big Fat Mama
Ring of a Change
Shy Fly

If hits are considered high-charting singles or radio-friendly songs, I think this list would be appropriate.

The Beatles
1. In My Life
2. A Day In The Life
3. Tomorrow Never Knows
4. Taxman
5. Good Day Sunshine

Since the majority of Beatles songs are now popular, and are now radio-friendly, I'm going based off of what I've read about public reaction to the songs in the 1960s.

Bob Dylan
1. Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands
2. Every Grain of Sand
3. Blind Willie McTell
4. Blood In My Eyes (a cover, but really is a Dylan-esque song)
5. High Water (For Charley Patton)
Any way the wind blows...

i would say that none of the following are what would be considered "perhaps tucked away in the back catalogue"

The Beatles
1. In My Life
2. A Day In The Life
4. Taxman
5. Good Day Sunshine
or Pink Floyd: Shine On You Crazy Diamond

No Beatles song is really "tucked away in the back catalogue" and if it is, it should be there.

It's hard to do one for the Beatles, since, you know, kind of the most successful group in history, so all their songs are really known.

Having said that, I guess I'll give it a second shot. Now that I think about it, there are some great Beatles songs no one really knows.

1. You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)
2. Old Brown Shoe
3. Hey Bulldog
4. There's A Place
5. She Said She Said

Yeah, it's a great song! But really, unless you grew up in that time period, or you're a ravid Dylan fan, you won't know one of his greatest songs (in my opinion).
