Any reason why Queen sang to a backing track for this peformance?

All the artists at the Montreux Golden Rose festival mimed, until The Cross became the first band to play live there in 1988

^ That's some kind of innovation that Queen should have done. A shame.

Well, apart from nobody having sung live there by 1986, as inu-liger pointed out, you also have to remember that by then Queen were used to large open venues. Playing in a relatively closed and confined space wasn't really what they liked doing. Queen really don't work as a lip-synching band though - the performance looks too phony.

I've been wondering about this myself. "Phony" is a good choice of words, Costa86.

The vocal improv was live though, as was the speech before Hammer To Fall.
