Whatever happened to Queen’s John Deacon?: ‘He doesn’t feel able to cope’

Sorry Gerry can't agree, don't know where you get the '97 thing from, he did one song with Elton john, recorded no one but you, because that was kinda important ! And finished the songs for made in heaven because that too was kinda important !! But he never went out and promoted these things. Its common knowledge he hated touring and hated interviews etc, there would have come a tipping point and he would have left Queen. But the one sure thing is......only he knows, and we can all have our opinions outside looking in .

speculation is all we can do sure, but as you state only john knows the truth.

Maybe one day we'll get his side of the story, if enough money is thrown at him :-)

The annoying/frustrating/sad thing is that he could carry on writing, recording and doing a few one-off live shows without the 'rock star' aspect being a burden; he could quite easily come and go as he pleases really with Roger and Brian doing all the 'heavy lifting' - the press wouldn't really be interested in John would they? - I mean, look at bass players from bands like Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, Genesis etc..,and outside their fan base they can live their lives as they please; I'm sure any mainstream press wouldn't have a clue who they are.

Sure, the mainstream press have no clue who Roger Waters is.

There is still a Queen group "out there" but its a joke of a circus now, pretty sad don't you think?
Deacon was wise to get out early.

We really know very little about John. We could speculate that he is (or became) somewhat of an introvert, and that he was always a bit of an awkward and quiet sort of fellow. We could speculate that he despises what Brian and Roger are doing (I doubt it though). The truth is, only he knows why he cut off all links except business ones with Queen.

Now that he's been living this way for so long, I doubt he'll ever have anything to do with the public aspect fo Queen again.

Once again; John, If you're listening/reading. .... please give me one of your basses...it could even be in dire need of repair.


I'm a fan and a bassist. You encouraged me with melody... and though I'm not as good as you, heck.... you're not really using it.

IMO John (as opposed to Brian and Rog) always saw himself as a business man, and Queen was the perfect vehicle to conduct his business. Yes he loves music, yes, he's an artist but first and foremost he was a successful business man and it looks like he always walked that line. Fame and stardom were just traits that came along with the job.

I think the passing of Freddie gave John the perfect timing to call it quits. Let's just say he saw that as his cue to put a stop to this idea that may have been floating around his mind for a long long time.
