Is there any way to get the film clips in better quality than they're in on the Greatest Video Hits DVDs? The quality on some of those is exceptionally poor, but there doesn't seem to be much alternative.
Of course HD is a big ask. At very least, the uncropped versions of the 4:3 videos should be available, right?

The only way to get them in a higher resolution is to rip your own DVD's and upscale them, but Im sure you dont want to do it!
It seems that many bands are not interested in getting their videos in HD (or, in the case of GH 3, DVD). I cant blame them, bluray discs have been accessible to most people just recently, but the lack of catalog (compared to DVD) and the fact that 4K tv's are a lot cheaper, and an upcoming new 4k format may be released in the near future, may be the cause for the delay.

Ah well. I can't complain that they're focusing on live releases and not this - their music videos were never anything at all special.

And besides, i bet most of Queen clips were filmed in tape, Fat Bottomed Girls and Another One Bites the Dust looks horrible, for example.
Barcelona was filmed, and the HD version of the clip is in Queen youtube channel. Probably Made in Heaven (1985) was filmed aswell.
I'd like to know if A Kind of Magic and Princes were filmed or videotaped, knowing Mulcahy is a film director.

Everything from Works, Magic, Miracle & Innuendo was filmed

Some of the early/mid stuff was also filmed, like "Save Me" for instance.
Not all of The Works stuff was shot on film, "Hammer To Fall" was for sure, but "I Want To Break Free" was shot on tape if I remember correctly. Not sure about "It's A Hard Life"

Break Free & Hard Life both film

Don't Stop Me Now definitely is. It's really hard to tell if Break Free is just based on the YouTube video, which seems to have really choppy playback (unless my PC is failing).

The following were shot on film:
We Are The Champions, Bicycle Race (only the shots of the girls cycling), Don't Stop Me Now, Another One Bites The Dust, Save Me, Body Language (I think), Radio Ga Ga (but not the hover vehicle bits), It's A Hard Life, I Want To Break Free, Hammer To Fall, One Vision, A Kind Of Magic, Friends Will Be Friends, Who Wants To Live Forever, Princes Of The Universe, The Miracle, I Want It All, The Invisible Man, Breakthru, Scandal, Innuendo (mostly), I'm Going Slightly Mad, Headlong, These Are The Days Of Our Lives, No-One But You.
They may not still retain the original film rushes for some of them, so are stuck with bad videotape transfers. They should be available for the David Mallet and DoRo ones though.
Even ones from videotape will benefit from the higher bit-rate of Blu-Ray (just look at Somebody To Love on the Days Of Our Lives documentary).

It seems likely that they don't have all the original prints anymore - you'd think they wouldn't present Another One Bites the Dust in such terrible quality unless it was absolutely all they had, for example.
Still, chopping the 4:3 clips down into widescreen amplified the quality problems that were already there in many cases... Such a misguided decision. I'm so glad they're keeping the more recent SD concert releases intact in their aspect ratios.
Radio Ga Ga is probably my favourite Queen video clip. It's so stupid and so fun.

Give them time.
The upscaled Rainbow to a SD BD was a test to see how well it would do.
I suspect that the long rumoured BD of the promo vids will soon be back on the cards now they can produce a great SD upscale of their video sourced promos.

How was the Rainbow upscale, by the way? I skimped out on the SD Blu Ray, figuring it couldn't be that much better than DVD.

^ I can only say the SD blu-ray looks way better than I expected.
I can't compare it to the DVD, but I would be most surprised if there is no noticeable difference.
Surely somebody who has both copies can verify please?

Around the date of release Days Of Our Lives documentary, Rhys Thomas said that he would like to see all promo vids on bluray in someday. He was the producer of Video Hits DVDs if I remember correctly. So, maybe someday we will have the Queen Greatest Video Hits Bluray.

I have lots of nice memories around the Queen videos that I would love to see them in HD too. It doesnt matter if the quality is not the best.
