I could hear a couple fighting, and two pigs having sex in the background. I might be mistaken, but I may also have heard a gunshot and an advert stating that the anthology will be released sometime this year.

Good god, yes. And that's not pleasant! Almost as annoying as the sound neon lights give off!

Presbycusis or age-related hearing loss, is the cumulative effect of aging on hearing.
The Mosquito or Mosquito alarm is an electronic device used to deter loitering by young people by emitting sound at high frequency, in some versions so it can only be heard by younger people. The devices have attracted controversy on the basis of human rights and discrimination concerns.
The device is marketed as a safety and security tool for preventing youths from congregating in specific areas. As such, it is promoted to reduce anti-social behaviour such as loitering, graffiti, vandalism, drug use, drug distribution, and violence. In the UK, over 3,000 have been sold, mainly for use outside shops and near transport hubs. The device is also sold in Australia, France, Denmark, Italy, Spain, Germany, Switzerland, Canada and the USA.
Critics say that it discriminates against young people and infringes their human rights, while supporters argue that making the Mosquito illegal would infringe the rights of shopkeepers who suffer business losses when "unruly teenagers" drive away their customers.

That's a 10-second sample of an audio clip at frequency of 17.4 kHz and bit rate of 120 kbps only audible for people under age 25 (or in some cases, for people that haven't undergone presbycusis)

Ouch my ears! Is it normal that it caused me pain? And yes, I'm 34 and I heard it

I fucking HATE those mosquito alarm devices. They have one at the Southgate Mall here in town right at the main entrance, and it is painfully annoying as hell having to hear that even while just walking through the doors.
I'm nearly 29 and I can still hear that frequency very clearly.

Depends on the volume. The louder you have it on, the more likely you'll hear it (regardless of age) and the more likely that it hurts.
I recently had a professional hearing test (long story), and it turns out I'm approximately 30% more sensitive to sound in most frequencies than the average person, but apparently, that also means I'm about 30% more susceptible to hearing damage across the board. So if you have good hearing, be warned! It also means you have to take stronger measures sooner than the average person to protect your hearing
