When I look at the englisch Wikipedia entries for both
releases it seems as if Queen Forever was the bigger succes.
I think this is somehow a confirmation for QP that the path of thowing out compilations and 'unreleased' tracks is more profitable than the effort to give the 'fan base' live releases.
Anybody thought about?

But surely they'd take into account that it wasn't just any old compilation, but one with three new tracks, one of which was completely unheard.

Sum it all up, just an old comp with one unheard (for most Queen fans) track

As great as the Rainbow release was, it probably doesn't cater to the average masses... I mean, how many songs did they have in '74 that people instantly recognize?

Also promoting Rainbow wasn't that great, there should have been snippets and commercials on the radio not only in the UK but also in Europe. Probably buzz on audiophile and rock/hard rock/metal forums contributed more to the sales than official promotional campaign.

The Rainbow DVD peaked at no. 8 in Denmark, whilst the Budapest DVD peaked at no. 6.
Strangely enough, this week's charts has the Wembley '86 DVD suddenly appearing at no. 3. It peaked at no. 2 when it first charted.
Wembley has been re-appearing in the Top 5 in Denmark since Queen + Adam Lambert gave a show in Denmark.

Is it really surprising that a compilation would sell better than a 40-year-old live album without most of the 'hits' on it??

To me it is a bit of a surprise that after GH 1, 2, 3 not to
forget the Platimum collection people are still ready to
go for another compliation.
But speaking for Germany Queen Forever was much better
promoted, and also the release date Close to Christmas
helped a lot. I think these factors were more important
than the 3 'new' songs, which made NO Impact in the
public and radio in Germany at all.
I suppose that over the years Rainbow will will easly
sell out Queen Forever.

And all of you forgot Deep Cuts, Deep Cuts 2, Deep Cuts 3, Classic Queen, Queen Rocks, Greatest Hits 3, Greatest Hits 4 (well, that's not official), The 12" Collection and the Forever vinyls.

Greatest Hits 3 ya se mencionó! Y Queen Forever en vinilo es lo mismo que el lanzamiento original...
QUE TE PASA????
(?)

Of course, the shitty and ugly Greatest Hits 4 doesn't count.
Maybe we should count boxsets as compilations as well... Crown Jewels, Complete Works, Ultimate Queen, CD singles boxes,
and don't forget "15 of the Best" from 1984!

Queen Florecer in vinyl isn't the same 'cause of having the Let Me In (William Orbit Mix) vinyl (and of course being launched quite later).
And Gran Hermano 3 wasn't mentioned as GH3, it was mentioned in that Crystal/Platinum/Yellow/Red/Green/Heartgold or whatever recompilation of all the GHs.
