'39

random post but '39 was only 36 years from 1975 when it was released...seems so so long ago, but now that album is over 40 years old itself.

anyway don't think Brian was referring to 1939 in the song but still!

I'm sure he was. As the first line states "in the Year of 39"....

Since the song is about space travel, wouldn't it make more sense that it's about the year 2039?

Bri has stated that it was a science fiction song, the '39' is just indicative of a future time, nothing specific.

I loved this article.
Brian May has such dept to his art. The explanation he gives about `39 makes perfect sense, because the feeling is there. There´s something very special about this song. Very beautiful!

Really terrific article - first time I've heard him suggest that there's another layer of meaning, being the isolation from loved ones when working and touring in the music industry.

Yeah, cool article! I started a thread on this song a while back here.....I actually calculated it, the space travelers mentioned would have had to been going at something like 94% of the speed of light, for one year to pass for them, but 100 years for those back home...

And I always thought Long Away could be a sort of a sequel to '39, if you look at the lyrics. You'd have to be in space to 'stare at the moon all day', anyway. :)

So far... unfortunately not.

I`ve found two sources till now. But they are both useless more or less. One matches the one I `ve uploaded, and the other one would be a Pay-Site...

Interesting how the artist's mind works. Knowing that inspiration can come from anywhere, I found it interesting that Brian mentioned in the book about the man seeking to become the perfect poet, that the man returned home to find his friends "all dead and gone." I wonder if that line led to "All dead, all dead" or if he had begun working on that song around the time of ANATO? Or maybe there's nothing there apart from the fact most people may say that their friends were "all dead." He did it with the "Who wants to live forever line" from Flash Gordon so perhaps seeing those words inspired him?

There could certainly be a connexion.
