Should Freddie have avoided appearing at the Brits in 1990 ?

and referring to the stigma may i add that there was a 2015 comment on You Tube, going " that man was very brave to touch Freddie" for the host he handed him the award.
Of course the commenter may be a troll but still imagine the culture around AIDS 25 years before...

Queen also received an award at the Brits in 1977 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SO9ChXTJU5I.

Yes that`s a bit sad indeed.

I think it was Fred Mandel who handed over the Award to Queen.

Since he showed up, he could have given a brief speech. He knew the end is near and that he will feed a speculative frenzy with his appearance, so if he made one step, may as well make a second one.

"he could have given a brief speech"

What would he have said?

Whatever he liked, that was the last opportunity to wrap and sum up an outstanding 20 years of Queen.

He knew it, the band knew it, but Brian's speech was a bit anti-climatic. oh well...

I understand why he wore that suit, but not until years later when I saw pics of him wearing the very same outfit... but when he was much healthier (years before the Brits appearance).

That same suit literally hung on him at those awards and just made him look worse, to me anyway. Maybe a stubble would have helped, who knows.

Personally I don't think he realized how frail he looked at that point, otherwise he wouldn't have attended.

Of course it's just a total guess on my part, but there ya go.

It was the same suit he wore in Budapest in 1986 (in the Freddie "relax" bit where he is signing the guestbook & yes in 1990 its hanging off him, should he have attended? Possibly not but it wouldn't have stopped the rumour mill back then & he probably thought f*** it

Yeah but you know what, he did appear! He obviously felt he should have appeared, so then he should have appeared. I'm sure he was well aware of how he looked.

And, at the ceremony, he looked a thin yes, and it's obvious he had a trouble walking, he limped on, but you know, that was his night, his award, and he didn't look hideous - he had his dignity and he walked on with his friends and received the award graciously. Everyone by then had a fair idea of what was going on, and I think everyone felt compassion for him, and he wasn't looking for sympathy.

I hope no one is saying that at the time people in the Queen fan world knew or thought Freddie was HIV-positive. Because pretty much everyone I talked back then would say things like "he's just thin" and "he just needs some rest, is all." Denial was the word back then.
