I never heard it until finding it on a UK holiday compilation disc in '92. I remember how upset my wife was when she was heard it on a tape I'd made. She had purchased 'The Queen Collection' as a gift for me, and thought I had bought that release instead.
I have heard it played on occasion at this time of year while shopping.
When I did hear it the first time, it was 'that's all they could come up with?'
Indeed, 'I Dream of Christmas' would have been better.

They picked the wrong song ; should have gone with I Dream of Christmas.
Another vote for: it wasn't really that good of a song.
Doesnt matter about promotion/videos.. blah blah... Fairytale of New York was ignored when it was first released. Its either a good Christmas song or it isn't. It isn't.
Never knew so many didn't like it until I read this thread. Maybe my judgement is crap, but I like it. It's my favourite Christmas song.
Agree with those who say I dream of Xmas is a better track, if there is a Freddie version in the vaults, they should work on that, lots of sleigh bells, less synths :-)

It's not that I don't like it. I just don't think it's a very good song.
But hey, maybe my judgement is crap since I love "All I Want For Christmas" , "Last Christmas" and "Lonely This Christmas" to name a few...
Roger 's lyric book shows that he was playing with the idea of developing 'Starbright' into a Christmas track. In the end, he abandoned that notion and produced 'Young Love' instead.
i think its a great song and great vocals
