As requested, this is an extremely small share, just the 1 minute long footage from Saarbrucken 1979.

For years I thought it was 8mm footage, with all the heads in the way and everything - but the first few seconds clarify it's from TV.

If i`m not wrong that footage comes from an old U-matic tape. Anyway, could it be originally recorded with some 8mm camera and later telecined on video tapes for tv standards?

That is the official information by the local TV Station of the filmed footage about that festival.

1. Pre festival report 16 /08/79 0.47 sec.Show : "Aktueller Bericht"

2. Rehearsal report 17 /08/79 0.43 sec Show: "Aktueller Bericht"

3. Open Air Festival report 25 /08 /79 5.02 minutes Show: "Daten der Woche"

So ... is it 8mm audience footage edited together to look like TV video, TV video, or 8mm audience footage filmed FOR TV ?

Me, I haven`t seen these Clips, or I couldn`t remember.
But here is something to think about. Have a look at the map...Saarbrücken is near to France and Belgium. A Film Crew from a different/ foreign country is a potential option imo.
Just a thought experiment...

You mean, something like the test recording of Queen in Paris? Ommiting the fact that it was recorded by an Argentine TV station.

I just noticed this but unless it's been pointed out already, on one of the Saarbrucken pics on Bob's site has what looks to be a camera possibly the 8mm footage being shot?

Looks like a crumpled piece of paper and a rose to me.

That looks nothing like an 8mm camera to me :P
