And not that it matters - but in popular culture as well (at least in North America), I find that far more people are aware of it as a Bowie song.

Well ... loads of people think the earth is 6,000 years old and vaccines cause autism, that doesn't mean anything.

Good bless good ol' 'Merica!
Even if we have other issues here in Europe. On topic... i wonder why both Bowie and the members of Queen (except maybe Roger) never were proud of UP.

John was, even though he hated 'Hot Space' (that's right, he did).
Anyway... no idea about Fred (maybe he was just too coked to even remember those recordings) but as for the other two, I can imagine why they weren't particularly proud of it:
* David: The final result wasn't what he wanted.
* Brian: The final result wasn't what he wanted.
So there.

I found a bit dressed down version of UP, where you can hear more clearly these more unorthodox sounds.
So, is the sax that sound coming in 1.06? Also 1.57 and maybe most clearly 2.40? Sounds a bit cacophonic to say the least, perhaps good thing that they buried it in the mix!
Also, couple of strange sounds..
One coming on in the intro, 0.17, most likely a synth, but sounds almost like a vocoder to me?
Also that sound that plays two tones, starting in 2.48 continuing to the end. What is that? Sounds like some strangely distorted guitar or electric piano?
Correct me if (and when) I'm wrong but to me it sounds like two different persons playing piano on the verses and the rest of the song (not counting that two toned motif).
On the verses the piano playing sounds a bit sloppy to me (Bowie?) and on the rest of the song it sounds more delicate and professional (Richards?). I might be just imagining.
Also, who played the organ on the bridge? Mysteries, mysteries.. :-)

The thing about that song is, there were seven confirmed eye witnesses...
* Three of them are dead.
* One of them is retired.
Out of the three remaining ones, one or two of them weren't present at the NYC sessions and the three of them have repeatedly proved to lack an eidetic memory.
