Here's a good question - if this WAS released officially (say an easter egg on a new Greatest Flix package, would we be OK with the 30 minutes being whittled down to say a 10 minute highlight reel?
No.
Perhaps even tidied up so during the performances bits we'd hear the actual song rather than the ambient room sound?
DEFINITELY no.
Which also suggests someone clever might like to have a go at cutting a new video for the complete song using the best bits from this.
That could be interesting. Just like the new videos made for the Days of Our Lives Blu-ray

Great stuff! I wonder if the sword breaking incident was the seed that started Brian's curse?
And that's just the issue - if they released a product this year including this footage in about the same quality, hardcore fans would be saying - "it's exactly what we've already seen!"

And if they cut it down, the same fans would say - "how dare they cut it down!?"

Damned if they do, damned if they don't.

Even some Pink Floyd fans were ripping the new 27 disc box set to shreds because it was 98% previously seen/heard content (even if the man on the street hadn't seen the majority of it).

People just want to complain. They like having a voice, and the internet has made that release and resulting validation easier than ever. I think that really is the extent of it.

Let's just be happy that this stuff leaks out in one way or another.

I doubt that the filmer wasn't allowed to film. You can see Russel Mulcahy joking into the camera.

Maybe because it's been a hard day, but this had me in fits matt.

Maybe the director was pals with the filmer - but the filmer is definitely not part of the crew. The number of cuts during takes and the cases of him ducking away make it pretty clear that he's trying to keep himself scarce in the dark.

I'd say he was a competition winner.

It explains quite a lot.

^^ kinda assumed it was an insurance person on set. Frequently these things get documented for those purposes, especially considering the pyro.

Really the most exciting non release in a while.

As I read Phil H-J's reply to a comment, he was actually the one doing the filming:

"Lucky me was at the shoot at Elstree Studios many many years ago when Head of Creative for the 'Highlander' film distribution company. I kept this rough cut video and rediscovered it about a year ago."

And as for him staying out of the way it's probably just him staying out of the way. Seems like natural behaviour to me.

Part of the 'crew' or not, he's clearly allowed to be there. and allowed to film. It's 1986, so he can't exactly be discreet with his camcorder, and he obviously isn't.

Still, it's an interesting find, and nice that things like that can still surface all these years later,
