The opening verse and chorus of TYMD still gives me goosebumps...
Here too. It's the one and only time the remaining members of Queen played as a trio - just for one minute.
You also keep expecting to see Freddie on the stage, or to hear him singing. But he's not there :(
It makes you wonder why the three of them didn't have faith in themselves to go out as a trio.... No one would replace Freddie, and they'd not sell out Wembley, but it would've been bloody good!!
From reading stuff, Brian was obviously the one who wanted to distance himself from Queen, shame.....

They all dealt with their grief in different ways, as it to be expected.
What's interesting is that John and Roger were fine with continuing as Queen with or without Brian, but at some point after Brian got back in, Deacon got pushed out.
Something went down, and we'll probably never know.

I remember listening to an interview Brian did on BBC radio I think it was, when he was promoting Another World, the DJ kept asking him about Queen and he kept changing the subject back to his solo stuff! I think in the end he was getting quite pissed off!
I'll see if I can find a link somewhere....

For sure Deacy wanted to keep Queen alive for his purposes.
Wonder if that Philips Camcorder was in use later that night, when he surprisingly showed off some serious triple neck bass skills ;)

Agreed - it certainly looks that way....I'd love to hear some of the early (and by all accounts quite comprehensive) work that John and Roger did early on for Made In Heaven before Brian waded back in; would have been lovely to had had a sneak peek of a track or two on the deluxe extras.
And it's a shame that John also then cut him off from Roger too - they could have worked together on separate things, even if Roger and Brian were being 'Queen'. I feel sad that John just stopped playing altogether (certainly publicly) as he would have been great forming his own soul/Motown/pop outfit and really showing what he could do bass-wise in that scenario.

Something tells me he hasn't picked up an instrument in 20 years, or that he even has a room in his house with his gold records. It seems like he's just trying to be a regular guy with no acknowledgement of his past whatsoever.
Of all the reclusive rock stars, he as by far the biggest of them. Even Grace Slick does the odd interview. There is literally one video of the man in the last 20 years, and it looks like he's having a panic attack because ten fans wanted an autograph.
Something definitely happened to the poor guy in the 90s.

Mark Hollis of Talk Talk is another one. Such a shame (pun intended).

On second thought, it was probably entirely John's doing to leave the band.
I've heard that Brian and Roger continue to ask John to play with them every time they tour, and they always receive no response.
Heartwarming, if true.
(the asking, not the radio silence.)
Brian coming back in may well be entirely coincidental. Things still managed to hold together for about three years before Deacon left.

When did John actually 'retire'?
Was it around the time of the Robbie Williams thing or before that?

I suspect that the Bejart Ballet performance in 1997 was the "turning point" ...
I recall that Jacky Gunn speculated at a North American Queen convention (in the early2000's), that John might have been averse to performing without "Freddie to hide behind".
I wonder what John thought about "getting the racing car out of the garage" LOL
It is an interesting period in Queen's history. I remember reading an article written by Jacky Smith of the fan club and she visited Brian, Roger and John who were all in Roger's studio (along with Spike) - she went there to get merchandise signed to give away at the next convention.
Anyway she said as she walked back to her car she could here the opening bars to Innuendo being played live and she sat and listened for a bit.
This always fascinates me that the three guys were in the studio around 1997/98 for some reason and that they were rehearsing tracks. Also interesting that they would choose to play Innuendo.
Then in one of the fan club magazines in the news section it was reported that John had a small studio built in his house and he had remixed 'there must be more to life than this'.
So it seems he was keen to keep active up until 1998 when after Brian and Roger's solo albums he decided that enough was enough. Maybe it was the beginning of these ridiculous collaborations with Five and Robbie Williams that made him realise that their best days were behind them.
Maybe had Brian and Roger not embarked on solo material and tours in 1998 and instead had worked on Queen as a three piece then John would have continued for a little while longer. I also remember a fan club lettter than Brian wrote around this time stating that he, Roger and John frequently talk and that they almost decided to do a Queen tour..."but there were problems..."
In any event we'll never know why John retired but I don't think Brian or Roger can be blamed and perhaps it is someone said above that he didn't feel confident that they could do it anymore - his reaction at being asked for autographs after the WWRY premiere is difficult to watch.
Or maybe his wife was annoyed at his obsession with lap dancers and grounded him...
