So I scored myself a book about Rock instruments, and I caught this pic of the boys from I assumed would be the '79 leg of the Jazz Tour (You could faintly see the Jazz album cover on the bass drum). Anyone got a better copy of this pic and if anyone knows which night was this taken?

It's actually one of the first few nights of the US leg in 78. Probably Dallas.

Mercury's hair is a bit longer, and Brian likely never wore that outfit in 79.

Great pic !

Yeah, it does look like it's from Dallas. Didn't see any other pics of Brian on that outfit after looking through other pics of the tour. Thanks for the info!

PS: Also as a side note, this book also has a picture of ELO with what used to be the Crown light rig at the same page.

I always thought that Roger still used Robot head on bass drum during Jazz 1978 US Tour...
Just found that several first shows from the tour he used new 'Jazz' logo but since November shows it was changed back to Robot ! What's the point...? Maybe he simply changed the whole bass drum for some reason?

This was discussed in detail a couple of years ago. The crown and the space ship were not the same rig. The lights, trussing, rigging and dimmers were supplied by different lighting companies.

The ELO rig was designed and rehearsed with during the time Queen were touring .

In the original thread a guy who worked with the crown rig posted some excellent infomation about its design and components .

Related note: The 'Face' bass drum that Roger used after this - does anyone have a bigger version?

They're different? huh, could've sworn the rig looked similar. Guess that bit of info in Wikipedia was wrong

Wikipedia isn't always right.

Basically the ELO rig was bigger in diameter than the crown. The Saucer sat over the stage encompassing the whole stage. The crown didn't it hung above 6 ft above the stage at the beginning of the show. Freddie's piano was never hidden by the crown or the fold back monitors on Brian's side. From memory it was 52 feet wide. The saucer was over 60 feet wide. If you can find any views looking up at each rig you can see the difference in the truss construction and size
