16mm Motion Picture Film

So this is what I've been getting into this year. No idea how many of you are film enthusiasts but I thought I'd share anyway. Film as a medium and format (not a movie), that is. Well, I am. I shoot both 35mm photos and Super16 motion picture film. Super16 is like 16mm, shot on the same film stock, but camera's gate is wider (about 16:10 aspect ratio) so it retains more of the picture. Bought a Krasnogorsk-3 camera from Ebay this February. Spent lots of time and effort getting it going just the way I want to, solved some problems, like reducing the possibility of scratched film, jitter etc. Preparing these type of cameras take a while if you don't buy a 'perfect tested mint' version. The experience is really unique. Lots of thinking and planning involved. I've been wanting to create images like these for a long time now. Finally I did. Very happy, very satisfied. If you feel like checking out some of the footage, I'll embed it below. Please make sure to watch it in 4K or at least 1440p. The reason is that these options have higher bandwidth than 1080p thus the grain and detail looks a lot better and closer to the raw file. The first one is the prettiest of the 3, video quality wise. Shot on an expired colour reversal (positive - can be projected) Kodak Ektachrome 100D stock. Very well processed and scanned. Here's a very experimental looking 16mm footage. Scanned by different service in 4:3. Although the actual image on film is wider than this, I don't mind the old aspect ratio since it emphasises the 'old' impression. And by old I mean, it looks like found film from early past century :-) It was severely underexposed and home processed (not by me though, an enthusiast friend of mine in the UK). The colours were crap anyway, so I just made it B&W. And another one expired, home processed film. Doesn't look as bad as the 2nd one but not nearly as good as the first one. Anyway - Gonna save up some money for fresh negative stock. It's gonna look killer. Need to think of an idea next time. A short short film that makes sense. Something for the future..

I think this is just brilliant Chief, and it evokes such a sense of nostalgia in a way. It's very interesting to see modern day scenes filmed as if they took place so many years ago.

Second and third are my favourites. I really like how old fashioned these films look like. Especially the second one like it was filmed 100 years ago. And I love cats :)

Mildly unrelated, but still holding out for the day that a decently priced Super 8 scanner goes on sale.

I mean, there is one or two of 'em out there, but one of the ones I looked at has no real quality controls - and the other will actually scratch the shit out of your film if you don't mod it up first.

What is the fucking point? I don't want my film being held hostage by some mook in another city for months at a time, I wanna scan it myself. And I don't want to have to build a DIY shitbox out of Lego and floppy disk drive motors.

I don't want to get all Jewspiracy on you guys, but Is there some kind of embargo being put on development of such scanners by the 'home video archiving' industry??
