I have been looking to add to my collection with some promo vinyl but am not sure about how genuine they are. Most just seem to have a little sticker on them saying not for sale promo only. Is that how they were issued, seems that would be very easy to fake. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Many just have a sticker. Some are stamped. The majority of what you see is genuine and were issued that way, but I agree they are easy to fake.
The easiest promo records to find are the American white label 7". Many of them are quite cheap.
