I did see the "Garden Lodge" tapes thanks to a member of Queenzone. It was interesting,
but there are much better pictures of us. Since this is a video, it was more cool than the
poor lighting and all looking silly in our "shorty-shorts"...very unflattering - lol.
I did not read Jim Hutton's book. Did I miss something good or not so much?

Thor...Thanks so much for all of your thoughtful answers. If you ever wanted to attend the Freddie birthday party in Montreux as a guest speaker you would be a HUGE hit...(No, I have never been to his birthday bash, but it sure looks like fun) Did you ever visit Freddie in Montreux?
Any thoughts on the "Bohemian Rhapsody" movie with Rami Malek slated for release next year? Are you excited about it or do you think that capturing Freddie on film is a nearly impossible task? Will you go see it? I am cautiously optimistic it will be a good movie.
BTW, I never read "Mercury and Me"...have only seen snippets on Google books.

I have read countless articles about Freddie and watched most of the YouTube documentaries and his interviews multiple times, so I am right there in the curiosity department!! There is something absolutely fascinating about him.

Apologies, this is my colloquial indulgence. I tend to presume everybody knows what the fuck I am talking about when indeed the truth be the opposite. I know what Bohemian Rhapsody is about!
Anyway, I digress. Dickinson being he of the Sacred Cow and with a pilot license. Bruce of Iron Maiden. He and they have butchered a handful of Queen songs. Fucking horrible stuff, and there's been some stinking Queen covers over the years.
If you do have the time I'd be interested in your reply on my question in my post above about rock n roll, but no drama.
Had to smile at Fred being friends with the Village People chap, was there an old queen in the music business Fred wasn't friends with?

From the noises that the band have been making it will be a sanitised load of shit. They are such an institution now they are intent on the brand being wholesome. I certainly wouldn't be expecting anything as interesting as The Doors. It'll be a PG and it will be more like the film of We Will Rock You. Queen were once a Rock n Roll band now they are just a show.

It's interesting how polarizing so many Queen/Freddie topics are. For example, people are either completely offended and angry with Brian and Roger for touring with Adam Lambert, or they think it is a great idea to keep Queen music going and they love the show. Either Freddie is the best singer/front man that has ever lived and Adam Lambert is a Karaoke joke, or Freddie had a fantastic voice, but Adam Lambert has a different, but amazing voice as well. Either people want a dark R-rated Freddie movie so that the more salacious aspects of his life are covered, or they want something more "sanitized" as you call it.
In the court of public opinion, Brian and Roger, as major drivers of this project simply can't win. I'm sure they know that.
How much do we want to know about Freddie's life outside of music and how much are we entitled to know? Not sure. It's not an easy question, as he was a complicated guy. I don't believe that his death removes the privacy and dignity he deserves. Hopefully the writer and director will find a way to treat their subject with respect, but not whitewash his life either. Yes, we know he was gay, yes, we know by his own admission he was promiscuous. Can they convey that without showing multiple detailed scenes of Freddie's liaisons around the world? I believe they can. What image do we want to be left with after seeing the film? I think it should be that he was an amazing and beloved singer whose rise to rock stardom was improbable given his upbringing. As a front man he was unparalleled. He was gay during a time when it wasn't easy to be gay...especially if you were famous. He led a rock star life, but at the same time, was content to hang out with his buddies and often shunned public attention. And boy could he ever write and compose music!!!

To clarify my thoughts on Queen with Adam. I've seen them twice, once in Chicago. Both times I thought they were very good. I happen to like Adam and thought he was very good. The second time especially as I was standing close to the stage nicely oiled shall we say was fantastic. They were loud, rocky and it was a superb night (the crowd were fucking stale and timid which was disappointing, we were looked down upon and tutted at for giving it some for fuck's sake). I actually think they should drop the + AL as everybody knows what's going on, like it or not Adam is the new front man. It's not a new thing in rock, it's just there's never been bigger boots to fill (sorry INXS fans). I am going again to see them in Newcastle. Seeing Bri and Rog in the flesh again is still a thrill and the show is solid, not a lot to dislike IMO.
But.... Adam is a pop singer not a rock singer. It might be a good night out and a good show, but let's face it it's more theater than rock n roll now. A fact pretty much highlighted in the set list threads. They're not a rock n roll band anymore they're an institution, a brand, a business who's product is rock,
Does this mean they are shit now? Does it fuck. Also, it's their music they can do what the fuck they want with it. Freddie himself said he doesn't give a shit once he's dead. But it is different. That's the way I see it.
On the film: I don't want to see a tabloid sordid view on Freddie's life either but I do want to see a balanced view on the band not a brand friendly one. For Christ sake they were rockers back in the day, let's not ake them out to be children's TV presenters (although that's a bad comparison). TBH just as is the case for books Freddie was so private away from the drugs, booze and gay scene that not sure what material there is to use.
Let's see stuff on the early days struggle, their cunt of a manager, the rows in the studio, Geldoff hunting down Fred to bully him to get them to do Live Aid (and Fred's rumoured reaction to being left off the single), the Sun City blow up etc etc. None of that should be sanitized.
I fear we will get a bland coming of age movie of a little Indian boy and his geeky chums who became mega-stars.
