I must confess I didn't realise that Mary was such a fascination with fellow Queen fans. I've barely given her much thought, seemed like a normal bird to me who may or may not have turned into a bit of a cow after Fred's passing. To me I've always thought that Freddie's relationship with her was quite straight forward: They met and were attracted to each other. For Fred the physical attraction was temporary (sexuality need not always be set in stone and linear 100% of the time) as he started to come to terms with he wasn't sexually attracted to her and was in fact gay. She got over it because she knew he was never going to change. From what we know of Freddie he didn't suffer fools and fakes gladly so I don't think he'd have stayed so close to her if she was all deception and self serving.
The justification to being bi over gay that I used to get told was that for periods in his life he was such a hedonist he slept with anybody, regardless of gender, who he was attracted to. Probably fueled by his typically mischievous quote "Oh I'll sleep with anybody my dahling, I don't care". It does seem now that more information has become available that this is a gross exaggeration and that he wasn't interested in women. Roger himself said instead of girls turning up it was boys. The consistent line from those who knew him and were in his life (including our host) is that they never saw him with a woman casually. I think it's fair to say he was "as gay as a daffodil, my dear".
Thanks for the info on Barbara everyone. Again, to me she's always been a bit of a footnote. I always saw her as some mad eccentric cow who was a bit of a hoot for Fred to hang around with in Munich. Maybe he did or didn't get particularly off his tits and try fucking her, I never much cared. I didn't realise she was such a vindictive lying bitch. To make the claim he knowingly affected Jim Hutton is truly horrible and totally inconsistent with the picture painted of him as a human being. I think the most critical we can agree to be on that score was that like many others at the time (but not Thor) he was irresponsible when a little but not a lot was known about HIV and AIDS. Didn't Jim Hutton say the moment Freddie knew he wanted to cease all sexual activity but Jim said it was OK to continue safely?
I think we have quite a clear and consistent picture of Fred from sources over the years, much of it echoed by Thor in this thread. Even that ghastly old Ham Straker talks of Fred's generosity and loyalty. I just wish we knew a little more about him as the musician, the frighteningly creative force he was. I do love his attitude to the Hot Space backlash "it's only a load of sounds for fuck's sake, it doesn't really matter". He really did seem to think of his music as disposable as he said he did, not lacking creatively but on to the next thing. Something Thor says he was like as an individual and perhaps reflected in his attitude throughout his illness, no moping and no talking about it. I think he knew he would burn brightly but not for long so he was bloody well going to burn as bright as possible.

And didn't he burn brightly. But then that's what happens with a star even after they've died they continue to shine for years.
I quite enjoy the fact that actually he's seen as cool now where as this most certainly wasn't always the case.
I think he would have been truly saddened and touched that Kurt Cobain referenced him in his suicide note.

Hey folks,
the following links will lead you to some german pages of papers who published some information about Freddie's time in Munich last year because of his 70th birthday. Peter Ambacher claims himself to be the last surviver of
the community that was hanging arround with Freddie in Munich in the 80's. His nikname, Mrs. Piggy, was mentioned before in this thread. Mrs. Piggy also said, that Mrs. Valentin was some kind of groupie try to get some light
from the Mercury sun to get more spot light for herself. One anecdote says that Freddie left trought the back door very often when Barbara Valentin entered the club or restaurant

As I said it's in german language untortunately but some pictures are showing places in Munich connected with Freddie's day and nights in this town.
Kind regards,
W.

Double-U, he ran out the back when she showed up? That's hilarious, thanks for sharing! Poor Freddie got used by so many but she was one of the worst. Gay erasing him for her own personal gain. Not to mention the attempted murder allegations she made on him. SAD!

Isn't that the truth?!? Many of us long-term American fans can remember the time from The Works all the way to Innuendo where Queen couldn't get arrested.
I'm VERY glad that Queen have become "cool" in America again...it's looooooong overdue.
@Thor
Great pictures! Is the Mickey/Minnie picture from Disneyland or Disney World? Are you a fan of either place?

Personally I don't give a toss whether he's Thor, Beelzebub, Scaramouche or Galileo. His comments have been modest, insightful, at times humorous and always devoid of any sensationalism. An imposter wouldn't answer half the questions with "I can't really say" or something to that effect. Which is more than can be said of 90% of QZ and most of the people who felt they knew Freddie and published books about him.
Thor has gone out of his way to be polite and welcoming to everyone in this thread and in my book he'd be most welcome even if he'd only ever exchanged a single Christmas card with Freddie.

On a serious note: You need to tone down a bit though "newbie".
Nine posts and already demanding stuff? This level of jackassery is only accepted from people with 300+ posts.
Yes, i am THAT guy.
Oh buddy. Fuck off. I'm not the one. I don't give two shits about how many posts you have or anyone else has. The irony of you making that post to me while talking about "jackassery" is too good. Oh yeah baby, I'm super intimidated by your millions of previous posts under "My Fairy Queen" which MUST be your birth name seeing as you are so concerned about what my name may be. Only a "jackass" would take issue with my username without using his or her real name to bitch and moan.
Jesus. Grow a sense of humor buddy. :')

Only 300? Going soft in your old age? ;-)
Hehe ;)

Haha! Day made with the second link! Another witness who says the Barbara/Freddie relationship was bollocks.
Because Queen recorded some of Hot Space at Musicland Studios, people assume he met Barbara in 1982 and claim they were living together from 1982-1985, despite Phoebe saying he never moved in. The evidence against Barbara's lie continues to stack up. Excuse me while I go and drink homophobic fangirl tears!
Wow...two full pages in only 10 hours. I will answer questions and make any comments
in reverse order.
captainjory,
Are you sure about the dates you have written? Unless I have 1982 amnesia, I remember
enjoying the entire year with Freddie and going to many of the Queen America '82 concerts.

Hey Fireplace,
Thank you so much for your support. Very nice to read your reply!

Hey PJUSA,
That is from Disney World which I WAY prefer over Disneyland.
I absolutely love the "World Showcase" part of EPCOT and have
had many a good time at the English Pub and Restaurant. A great
place to see the fireworks from and I always meet some very nice
Britains. I am, after all, a hopeless Anglophile if you haven't yet
guessed. I once asked the "old dear" who was entertaining at the
piano to sing "The White Cliffs of Dover" I LOVE that song!
