What about Ross McCall as Freddie?

That's the kid who played Freddie in Miracle video and did a great job. He is an actor; those of you who don't know.
Nothing really matters in the end.

Nope. He doesn't look anything like Freddie.

I really don't get all the John Blunt hype. I'm sure he's a great, committed artist and loves Queen, etc. but he is not an actor. He's a Freddie Mercury impersonator that has learnt his mannerisms and style. Granted, the guy has been doing it for way longer Rami Malek has. But he's not an actor. I think it was surprising enough he was hired for dramatizations/re-enactments for a third tier docudrama but there was ZERO chance he would get the lead in a Hollywood production just because he did that.

Obviously, acting is more than looking the part but I don't think he really looks the part anymore than any man with a mustache ever did: http://comunitaqueeniana.weebly.com/uploads/3/9/7/0/39701108/14956032-10155418046443136-4073463726272551131-n_orig.jpg
And that's him during the docudrama filming.
Also, there's no way he would be credible as a 25-year old Freddie in the early years segment of the movie.

To me it is not a totally fair comparison to consider, on one side, John Blunt's Freddie look in a FINISHED PRODUCT (the Channel 5 thing) where he did many takes in a STUDIO, which were then edited together seamlessly; each of these takes photographed from angles picked by the film's director and/or a director of photography, where image filters and audio was added/edited in post-production, vs. an odd, awkward photo of Rami Malek taken from across a field during a rehearsal on day one. The term "Movie Magic" exists for a reason :).

It's almost like when some people thought somebody like Gary Mullen should tour with Brian and Roger just because he put on a yellow jacket during a dress-up contest.

Of course,we are not all directors, but that doesn't mean that we can't say what we think.

I would really like Sacha Baron Cohen to play in that movie but he is not their choice.

Yes, John Blunt is not an actor but it doesn't have to mean anything. There are so many actors and "actors".

This film is only in the beginning, let's wait to find more out but we can share our first impressions, why not.

They should have hired Angelo Palmacci really....
He sounds like Freddie, looks like him (check Angelo's FB page : https://www.facebook.com/AngeloPalmacciFanPage/), though he's not an actor... and he is a really gifted musician !

I think with right makeup artist, he can absolutely pull it off.

If you think about it, how does Rami look like Freddie? i don't see it. Same goes for Sasha B Cohen; only because he had a mustache as Borat? All the names that have been mentioned during all these years to play Freddie, no one really looks like him:Johnny Depp, John Whishaw...on and on.. not lookalikes.
Nothing really matters in the end.

Brian and John - spot on, but Freddie and Roger - not so... It looks like the biopic is really going to tank now, which will be such an anticlimax. After all these years and A-list scriptwriters and directors getting rejected, because Brian didn't approve... Brian will realize what a mistake he made when the film goes quickly to DVD distribution and Poundland eventually. Next to an obscure Adam Sandler comedy and "Saw, part 9".[/QUOTE]

Is Saw, part 9 out already?! :-)

I can't really give myself the necessary distance from Queen to ever give this movie a chance, honestly. I find with things like Apollo 13 or Rush (the F1 movie by Ron Howard), I know way too much about the subject for my own good, and the acting - no matter how well intentioned or talented the players are - comes over as one big expensive cartoon.

It is a bit amusing to see John Blunt floated as a 'why didn't they pick him?' option. His characterisation of Freddie for that UK TV thing wasn't far off, to his credit - but it's difficult to fairly evaluate a guy's acting when every second line is "I have AIDS, darling - it's the AIDS! I've got AIDS!". (Not his fault, I understand - it's down to the scriptwriters).
If you're gonna play Freddie though, you also need to be at least a little credible when you're kissing other men - which John Blunt couldn't have possibly made more awkward unless he'd looked directly at the camera and rolled his eyes.

Not hating, I'm just saying that to do Freddie in a major motion picture would've required a way different approach than the one they took for that production. His moustache looked all of $5, and the entire thing was just maudlin. I'm kind of sick of Freddie Mercury getting sold short in the public eye; he was a fantastic musician and an interesting personality, but all anyone wants to talk about is 'did he catch HIV from that Russian sailor?'.

Anyway, I'm hopeful that Brian and Roger are able to steer this thing away from that direction. I honestly don't mind if it's two hours of Brian subtly saying "hey, we were a part of the band too", because I don't need to see any more cheap re-enactments of Freddie Mercury pissing himself to death. Guy was my hero, show some respect.

It must be terrible for them having Brian breathing down there neck all the time. As far as Malek in total honesty he looked like a dodgy parody of Freddie, he looked a cross between Norman Wisdom and Gollum.

Johnny Depp would of been a better choice he could of been made to younger etc but I'm thinking his fee may be to high not like the half a no bodies fee's. ,
I still think they should of used real footage of Queen performing at Live Aid instead of a parody.

Who knows they might pull it off I hope so it's just his look that takes the eye of the actual movie.

Very tempted to dig out the old threads by that person who poster endlessly about the person who should play Freddie a couple of years ago just for lolz.

Actually, there was a great one even longer ago. A brazilian guy I think who looked EXACTLY like Freddie in a couple of pictures. I have a picture saved somewhere.
