Beer Cups and Chewing Gum

Why were there always so many beer cups on top of Frederick's piano? I don't recall ever seeing him drink from any of them. I mean, "fuck it I need my water I don't care"... but beer? And is he really chewing gum at times or was that some kind of nervous cheek habit thing?
