Notes: The first of two Gary Mullen shows I attended on his 2018 tour. Had a great night seeing Gary. It was a great show overall and I'm glad he came to Michigan to do two shows in March! Hilarious stage banter as well! I tested out a Nokia Lumia Icon for this show (to try out at bigger venues with more security/metal detectors in the future) and the results exceeded my expectations. The sound quality is really good (considering it's from a phone) and I'm really happy with the way the recording turned out. Hope you enjoy this!

Don't know how much cash you're willing to fork out but this could be interesting for you if you are wanting to do make high quality super stealth recordings: https://www.dpamicrophones.com/dvice/mma-a-digital-audio-interface
Connect a set of dpa mics and a Phone and there you have it: super high quality rig, in super stealth mode.

(thanks for taping and sharing. I'm not downloading, but I always appreciate it when someone tapes and shares)

^^ You're welcome! dpa is not cheap, but they make amazing sounding mics. Tiny too!

Cool, thanks for taping and sharing.

Mullen sure has done his homework. And nice to see tunes like Black Queen and Invisible Man in the set. The Dead On Time and Princes of the Universe thing was pretty neat too.

I think he's got different musicians than he did a few years back - these guys actually sound a lot more like Queen.

He's playing with The Works less than 10 miles from my home next week but I'm traveling abroad.
There's a show on the 12th, when I'm back, but it's much farther away, in Staten Island.
Is it worth it?
How does it compare with Almost Queen and Dios Salve a la Reina? (The other Tributes I've seen)

I know Gary (not friends or anything) as he used to come into the shop I worked in. He used to pick me out at crowds and say hi. I've not seen him for ages, but there's a reason. He's a great guy, but I think his voice is fucked. There's so many cracks in there it's difficult to listen to. He has the look, the moves and the band - but he's lost the voice. He was amazing when he first started out. Too many tours, too many dates I think have taken their toll. He tries, that's for sure. Thanks for your efforts Greg!

You're welcome!

I think Gary has polyps or nodes (like Freddie) or something. His voice hasn't been the same since 2012. I guess he's paying tribute to Freddie though (by getting a vocal condition just like him)! :)

He's declining a bit, but he's got a few years left in him for sure.

Or maybe it was just an off night. He still sounds great overall, even with his voice cracking now and again.

Bob, I first noticed his voice was going a few years ago when I attended a show. I hoped it was an off-night, but all the footage I've seen online and clips I've heard suggest it's getting worse and the dodgy nights are getting more frequent. Now, I'm not dissing the guy. I like him loads, but he's just not right at the moment. He can't get the high notes, he's changing the tempo of songs and even the notes to cope. It sounds strange now. It could be a problem with his throat or it could just be one-too-many shows. I just wish he'd take a rest and give himself a chance to recover as I'd like to see him having more years.

It's too bad - there are a lot of singers who can't handle the rigorous touring schedules. I know some singers who can do 8 shows a week for months on end, and others who do 3 and can't even speak between gigs because they need to rest their voice. From what you're describing, this fellow is somewhere in the middle, and clearly he needs a break.

But there's another angle most people don't think of. When agents book tours like this and a band says no, they might not call again. Agents often have bands by the balls (I know this from experience). So you just have to take what you're offered, and grin and bear it. Of course it's #firstworldproblems to have too much work, but singers really need to take good care of themselves, especially when they're on the road and any number of things can go wrong. And generally agents just don't give a shit.

I don't want to speculate, but with some of the stories I've heard in the biz, nothing surprises me anymore.

For someone whose sole job is to imitate Freddie i'm suprised he doesn't pronounce the words in a more similar manner. Just listened to his version of Under Pressure...and on some words, he sounds way off...like he's doing a delibretely bad impression of Freddie. I'm not critising his singing, just Freddie never pronounced the word 'night', like he does for example.

Check out the end of the song 'edge of the niiiight' - nope, sounds like a WWRY audition - not like Fred.

I can't even begin to imagine what goes on behind the scenes, but if what you've said is a flavour of it, it sounds like garbage and all cut-throat. I'd hope for better things for this lad, because he really is a great guy. I hope he can get the rest he deserves and comes back like the piece of awsomeness I know he can be!

"The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench; a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side." -- Hunter S. Thompson

He wasn't wrong.
