This is my attempt to clean up the Tarantura bootleg of the first night in Japan 1979. The first half of the show wasn't taped, but what we have remaining is 53 minutes of tape, excellent both in performance and sound quality. But Tarantura tends to apply a ton of compression to their recordings, crushing it into a brick wall like a Katy Perry song.
I opened up the waveforms, and noticed that every few tracks it becomes more and more compressed. I needed to lower the volume (I guess the term is "normalize") as the show went along to level the entirely thing out, and then applied some EQ to minimize the effects of the compression and mid range that this recording was drowned in. I am pretty pleased with the results, and I hope you will be too.
However - in headphones it still sounds a bit "harsh", like there's some phase cancellation or something. Maybe someone can further improve this !? But I'm pretty sure I'm on the right track.
There were also hundreds of little clicks in the recording, and luckily GoldWave's pop/click filter removed them all with ease in one shot (which usually isn't the case).
"The Bootleg Failure" (Tarantura) > WAV (GoldWave volume adjustments, EQ, pop/click filter) > FLAC level 8
