Some Questions Regarding Brussels '79 Footage

Does anyone know if this show (26.1.79) was shot on video/film in its entirety? I know that there's 15 mins or so worth of footage between "Follies" (TV broadcast in '79) and "Japanese Jewels" in somewhat mediocre quality. There seems to be snippets of several songs from the start of the show through to the end, but was it just snippets that was captured, or the whole thing?

If more has surfaced on other shows/DVDs/boots, other than what I've mentioned above, can anyone tell me where?

It's pretty certain that the entire show was shot, but it was common in those days to just reuse unused tape. They aired what they wanted to air, and the rest of the footage was just taped over some day later on with something else.

To us, any morsel of footage is pure gold, but back then it was just another day at the office for everyone involved.

well. most of the time there were the raw filmed reels and the edited tape for the broadcast. The broadcast (edited version) was usually kept in the archives and the raw tapes were wiped and used again as of the costs involved. Unless Queen kept/ bought these raw tapes they are possibly no longer there.

If that's the case, such a big shame. Again, apologies if this one in particular has been discussed before. It probably has, many times, but my memory is like a sieve these days lol. With such a great setlist, it would have been awesome to see this in its full glory!

But the footage was shot on film, was it not? If so, there'd be no "wiping the tape".

Raw tapes or raw reels? That footage was shot on film, so it's reels. Now, film can't be re-used. I suppose it was edited down on the broadcast tape and film simply discarded.

Who knows. But at the time, we can be pretty certain that the master was the property of the TV station, not the band.

Can we be absolutely certain though? I wasn't 100% sure if it was film or tape - but, if film, how do we know it's definitely been discarded? This could be just sitting somewhere gathering dust. A flippin' shame either way.

I was once told by someone close to QPL that all of the Euro 79 footage that wasn't broadcast doesn't exist.

But of course, if we approach it like anything in the field of science, it's impossible to disprove the existence of something, so I guess there's hope in anything...

Well these TV stations were shooting things like short TV reports or short TV specials, they didn't really have a reason to keep the stuff they didn't use. Unless some employee "rescued" the unused footage we have to be happy with what we have

The film - although not exactly being nitrate film - would still have to be stored properly. That stuff costs money. For those kinds of TV stations, the cost outweighs the plausible future importance of the material.
You can bet your bottom dollar bill that it was discarded.

My question is (excuse me if it's a silly one), where did the people creating the Japanese Jewels get this footage from? It's too good to be from an original TV broadcast. Maybe they're from backup copies of the broadcast material?

That's a good question.

You can imagine how surprised we were 15 years ago when this suddenly popped up. I don't think we got answers back then, either.

By the way, does someone has the 2014 Belgian TV archive release of this? It should be free of japanese subs.
