Saying I'm gay is not an insult. I'm not, but I don't feel offended by that. There's nothing wrong with being gay, straight, bi, pan, a- or whatever so, no, I don't think calling someone else gay (even if they're not and even if it's with the intention of offending) is in any way 'character assassination'.
