I found this interview with Aaron McCusker, he playing Jim Hutton in "Bohemian Rhapsody". Interesting things about his role and movie. Now we know that Jim's role in movie will be small.

I'm a bit surprised that Jim has a little screen time. Hopefully he's still an important part of Freddie's journey in the movie. Although it could be explained by the timeframe covered in the movie since they only started dating in 84 or so. However, I like the actor's comments about Jim truly loving Freddie and the compliment he reportedly got from that one person who'd met Jim. Hopefully the character gets to make an impression rather than simply being portrayed as "Freddie's last".

Reading this I wonder if Dexter Fletcher was brought in to film some sort of ending set after live aid to act as an epilogue due to some of the criticism around shying away from frieddies illness and long term relationship with Jim?
