I'm not sure whether that's a rumor, but "Lover" might have been an early pre-Queen version of the track.

They reportedly shared one riff. One. That's all. The remaining 99% of the song could jolly well be completely different.

99%? How do you know the song's riff was only 1% of the song. Too many assumptions here.
Joking aside, how much do we know about that song? Was that an Ibex / Wreckage thing? Who has spoken about the song in interviews, etc,?
Honestly curious here.

I think one of the members from Wreckage said in an interview that they had an early version of Liar with lyrics 'Lover, why don't you believe me'
Also it was a song on a handwritten Wreckage setlist.

If I remember correctly, the song was mentioned somewhere here:

Lover was an Ibex song ... that "was almost the same tune" as Liar.
End of page 53 from Chopin1995's attachment:
That said, Geoff Higgins remembers at least one decent Bulsara-Berson tune: "They did a song called 'Lover'. The lyrics used to go, 'Lover, you never believe me" (which appeared on Queen's debut album). It was almost the same tune. But not quite. In fact it was similar to 'Communication Break-down', they used to rip off Led Zeppelin a lot."

Which is ironic, as Zep made a living early on of ripping off lots of other artists.

Even more ironic is that Stairway to Heaven lawsuit was given a new trial last week.
