Hello all,

I have recently discovered 'Queen'. I have been an admirer of Freddie Mercury's voice for a long time, and after seeing a video of his Live Aid performance last month, and seeing the "Bohemian Rhapsody" film (being well aware of the film's...uh..."liberties" taken), I have been hooked on their music since.

I usually listen to Sinatra-style music, and I perform in musical theatre as a hobby. So this music is quite out of my usual genres, but Freddie as a singer and 'Queen' as a band is so all-encompassing of practically every style, genre, and taste it was impossible for me not to get hooked.

I've purchased the Wembley and Budapest concert albums (I'm drawn to The Magic Tour since it contains the live performances of "Who Wants to Live Forever"), as well as 'The Platinum Collection'. My favorite songs so far are "The Show Must Go On" (this was the song that got me started on Freddie...I even recorded a cover https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pKZRfnB9BFc this is far out of my stylistic ability but I tried anyway, I'm sure its rubbish haha), "Who Wants to Live Forever", "Is This the World We Created", "Radio Gaga", "One Vision" and "Hammer to Fall" and obviously the usual suspects ("Bohemian Rhapsody", "Killer Queen" etc.)

I came here to ask: I want to get further into the discography other than the live albums and compilations. Based on my favorites so far, do you all recommend a specific order to start looking into their further discography? Any full albums you recommend over others to start with? Any to avoid (it seems 'Hot Space' may fit that bill)? Or should I just start from the beginning?

I really look forward to getting more into 'Queen'. Freddie's voice and performing talent is just incredible.

Thanks!

Congratulations. You're a new Queen fan.

I envy your new endeavor. I could remember being a kid and having to save up dough to buy each new (by then OLD CATALOGUE) album and wondering somewhat the same thing. Our was pre internet boom and sometimes all i had to go by were snippets of songs.

For instance i never knew which album had the track PRINCES OF THE UNIVERSE because I'd only heard it used on the highlander tv show. And my broke ass (i was a kid) had never seen the film.

When looking through cds at tower records or wherever there was no indicator on the sticker that the album A KIND OF MAGIC was from the HiGHLANDER soundtrack. So consequently i "discovered it" late into my album purchases.

Also discovered i didn't like the middle bit.

I actually prefer the soundtrack helicopter one that leaked recently.

Back to point. I'd suggest going with SHEER HEART ATTACK if you're a rock fan. A NIGHT AT THE OPERA if you simply wane too hear a near perfect album.

Can't go wrong with any of thosE two. From my POV there can be no wrong "missteps" from QUEEN II to THE GAME

Just my two cents. I also think INNUENDO may be one of their greatest albums and that MADE IN HEAVEN is great in its own right ... (*and many will disagree with that. Many loathe MADE IN HEAVEN)

congrats on being interested in one of the most amazing eclectic music catalogues there is.

Hello and welcome on board!
From the songs you listed, I would recommend the later albums, meaning from the 80s on. Maybe you should work your way backwards: starting with Innuendo (or even Made in Heaven).
The 70s albums are absolutely great as well, of course. ;)
And don’t forget to listen into „Barcelona“, Freddie’s album with Montserrat Caballe.
Have fun! There is so much to discover!

Same thing happened to me with the track "Friends will be friends"!
It was arround 1988, I was still at school and I didn't have very much information to find in which album it was.

Welcome aboard sammyfrankfreddie96! :)
In my humble opinion, I would suggest going with Queen II. The first time I listened to that album I was a teenager, and it really blew my mind! it made me want to go much further into their discography.
Anyway, whatever order you choose, I think you're going to like Queen even more :)

I'd start from the early albums and work my way up to the later albums. Same with the live shows.
Any way you do it, is good though.

Dear god do you ever stop, can't even stay on topic with a new Queen fan who hasn't even mentioned anything other than "Queen". Totally pathetic.

My advice for using this forum is beware of the grumpy old-timers. Some of them see "Be Gentle, I'm a newbie" as a declaration of war. So, if someone goes on a rant just ignore them if they don't say anything useful. Having said that, I would also advocate using the search function since most topics have already been covered here (but don't revive old discussions) though often you might be more likely to find someone asking a question and then being hounded by the old guard for being a newbie and asking things that have already been covered.

Another point is, don't get involved in the pro/anti Adam Lambert "debates" unless you hate yourself and the world. If you want to talk about Adam then use that section (also, just be aware of which section you are posting in, people get annoyed).

Ignore Mooghead. Always.

Talking about Maylor milking the Queen brand?

I love all of Queen's music, I have been a fan since I was five years old. Growing up with Queen in the 70s, my take is that their first seven albums are flawless, and their later stuff, while still good, doesn't really compare. I've realized that those fans that discovered the band in the 80s actually prefer the band's catalog from the 1980s on.
What era does a brand new fan like sammyfrankfreddie96 fall into?
Someone pretty much familiar with the greatest hits alone.

I would suggest going in the direction that appeals to you most. So far you like the later stuff, (The Show Must Go On, Who Wants to Live Forever...). I suggest starting with those albums like A Kind of Magic and Innuendo, and even The Miracle, these are the last three from Queen. No matter what era you're drawn to, just remember that their greatest hits that you hear on the radio are no where near as cool as the songs you don't hear on the radio. I'm interested to see how you will take in the early stuff from the 1970s. For me, they might as well be two different bands. I don't think I would be as big of a fan I am now if they started their career in 1980, for me it's all about 1973-1978 that laid the foundation.

Keep us updated on how you feel about the new discoveries you make from their catalog.

He did mention Bo Rhap and Killer Queen, so I'll say start with A Night At The Opera...That album has many styles you may like that Isn't typical Rock, Like Love Of My Life, Lazing On A Sunday and 39...Then If all goes well, Sheer Heart Attack. For the later albums Innuendo and Freddie's Barcelona if you don't mind Opera.

Hey all!

Thanks so much for the welcomes and the suggestions. I think I'm going to start with the later albums but include "A Night at the Opera" and go from there! Really looking forward to checking out the "non-greatest hits" gems that await me. I'm also really keen on checking out the "Barcelona" album, I'm a fan of operatic vocalists (big Mario Lanza fan), so the mix of the two voice types is really intriguing.

I'll have to restate I've never listened to much rock music so I apologize if I come off ignorant in any future possible discussion haha.

In reply to Mooghead: My apologies for my poor wording! To be more specific, I admired Freddie's voice from the songs I had heard but hadn't sought out any further 'Queen' specifically. More so whenever I saw a clip of Freddie singing I was always really blown away by what he could do.

I know I was warned to ignore you but I'm hoping to avoid too much negativity and just wanted to explain!
