Queen - Jazz (1978)
“Of course A Night At The Opera is brilliant. But what I recall as a kid was that my brother and I would throw around the vinyl copy of that album as a frisbee. There was never any disrespect intended, but that’s just what happened.

“Now, Jazz… that always seemed to be on the turntable whenever my parents had a party. It’s one of my earliest memories of those parties, actually. So, in a way I was brought up on it. Of course, the fact that there was a poster inside the album with lots of naked girls riding bicycles has nothing whatsoever to do with my love for this album. It’s all about the music to me!”

Thanks for posting this, amusing, yet inconsequential, tidbit that brought a smile to my face ...

Let me just channel the mainstream of opinion here on QZ:

How DARE he like Jazz. You can't like Jazz. You have to hate it, it's crap, despite the fact that it's got great songs. The production is 'terrible', despite the fact that it's the kind of sound that was really popular in the late '70s. None of the members of Queen liked Jazz, none of the fans like it. Nobody ever bought the album, apart from some perverts who just wanted the poster. In fact, it's not even a Queen-album, it's all a hoax. Jazz never happened!

On a more serious note: I think there would be a different kind of response here (apart from mooghead, who would whine regardless of what the subject was) if he'd picked any other Queen-album other than Hot Space or Flash Gordon. I honestly don't get the hate against Jazz, which is a fine album and by any reasonable definition much better than The Game, which never gets such flack.

Yeah, Jazz is one of my favs. The fact he also selected a Cardiacs record too - a class act.

This is Justin back in 2013, a few seconds before he accidentally bonked me on the head with his Gibson. At least, I think it was an accident.

As for Jazz, why not? Great album, Sound's a bit muddy but the songs, playing etc are classic Queen.

The Game is a classier Queen album than Jazz and has sophistication oozing from every track! i love it !
Play the Game, Crazy Little Thing, Save Me , Sail Away Sweet Sister, Dragon Attack etc ........ knockout.

Almost as bad as News of The World and a Night at the Opera. But the Game was THE final nail in the coffin.

Jazz and Hot Space - the very definition of desert island discs.

can you define reasonable in the context of Jazz > The Game?

- sales
- hits
- critical success
- mass appeal
- which one had Sail Away Sweet Sister?
- which one had Fun It or More Of The Jazz?

Jazz is not the worst album - but not as great as Queen II through News of the World, or maybe only in my opinion, The Game and Innuendo.

I'd pick Jazz over Hot Space through The Miracle and Made In Heaven. As much as the running order and production of Jazz sucks, it has enough variety that does make it a fun listen every now and again.
