Interesting stuff. Definitely a unique recording. I wonder if this guy recorded Humpybong's performance

Yeah it's a great version. I remember there was a discussion on here about it - I had compared the intro to the studio version and concluded they were the same. Of course, they'd just tagged that on for the documentary :D

May using a REAL guitar; if only he'd been a bit more flexible, we could have had a far greater diversity in the band's sound.

Mass produced Gibson LPs were of variable quality in the 1970s -- some were really shit. I get your point that Brian limiting himself to the RS also limited the range of sounds he could produce, but weighed against that is that the RS sounded epic back then. And to an extent it doesn't really matter as the BM "sound" could be replicated on different guitars. For example, as you probably know, he played a solo on the Flash soundtrack with a cheap strat copy and it sounds indistinguishable from the RS.

Quite possibly Gary J Brum is part of the Kaleidoscope group who found the clip and returned it to QPL.
Whilst the group will never share the material with outsiders, I'm sure the "top brass" have shared it amngst themselves.

Delightful - another carrot dangler. But at least they shared a snippet of it.

It's definitely a completely different performance of the song. Great playing from Dr May.

But who knows why another version was necessary for only this song and GOFLB ? For the rest of their TOTP appearances they just used the studio versions.

He isn't a Queen fan, yet he comments on a Queen video on the Internet and he teases people with rare material. It's cool to see these things are out there, but these attitudes are weird to say the least.

Definitely a re-recording. Much more like the live version with much louder bass and the extra snare beats.
The album version's wall of sound effect really buries the bass (which is sad, because it's great) and Roger's drums drag.
I wonder why they recorded it that way???
Go, Go, Go, little queenie!!

Yep. I put out a thread on it a while back

The old musicians union rules meant that if bands were to mime a TV show they'd have to rerecord the track. Lots of bands dodged this by getting the MU rep drunk and then presenting the studio version as the new recording (perhaps lightly remixed) As shown by the BBC radio sessions Queen favoured using their proper album versions for backing tracks (saving time, preserving the nuances of the recording) but I can imagine in the case of NIH they actually fancied presenting it in a more 'live' version so were happy to redo it. Perhaps they were in the studio that day anyway? We know SSOR was a last minute appearance so I guess there was no time to recut it and that version remained on file at the BBC for future TOTP appearances. KQ might have been considered too intricate to redo? GOFLB? Dunno.

Perhaps the 1975 KYA started out like this for some reason ahead of the US reissue? I always thought it far too raw to be considered a new studio version for release. Perhaps KYA was going to be reissued in the UK too? I speculate.
