When the Adam Lambert debate temperature rises
And the meaning is oh so clear
One thousand and one new posters
Begin to quote Instagram posts on here, oh dear
Are they trying to tell you something?
You're missing that one AIDS diagnosis thread
You've simply not been a fan that long my dear
To be honest you haven't got a clue
This forum's gone slightly mad
This forum's gone slightly mad
It finally happened, happened
It finally happened, ooh woah
It finally happened, It's slightly mad
Oh dear
I'm one sloppy edit short of a fan mix
I didn't quite match up the Freds
I post a message and it comes up 4 times
Sometimes it will begin a whole new thread
My computer is coming down with a virus
I clicked on a spammers link
The trolls are taking over
It's time to delete forum I think?
Oh dear
This forum's gone slightly mad
This forum's gone slightly mad
It finally happened, happened
It finally happened, ooh woah
It finally happened, It's slightly mad
Oh dear
Uh uh ah ah
Uh uh ah ah
I'm trying to link videos but the link won't link
It's unraveling fast it's true
I can't post pictures either anymore
But my dear, how about you?
I'm slightly bad (at HTML)
This forum's gone slightly mad
This forum's gone slightly mad
It finally happened, happened
It finally happened, ooh woh

And there you have it

I’m laughing myself to tears. Brilliant!
Actually if anyone on QZ knew how HIV disease was diagnosed in the era of Freddie, there wouldn’t be so many bloody threads. His saga makes complete sense in that light. The testing, the maybe testing, the knowing, the maybe knowing, etc. The stuff we know, the stuff we kinda know, the stuff that might or might not be true.
In brief, you couldn’t be diagnosed with AIDS until you had an AIDS-defining infection or cancer. Before that no matter how many tests you had, or non-AIDS defining signs/symptoms you had (fatigue, night sweats, too sick to tour as a rock star etc.) the answer to your question, “Will I get AIDS?” was “We don’t know yet”.
So Freddie didn’t “know” he had AIDS until he had it.
Don’t believe me? I have links.
And there was no public health education about safe sex until Nov 1986 in the UK, and the UK was the first in the world to do that. So unless a doctor counseled Freddie about this, he wouldn’t have known it from a medical source. We know Freddie saw the TV commericials that started at this time, because he mentioned them and that he liked them and thought that the commercials and safe sex were good/necessary.
Counseling in that era was pretty terrible. There are hemophiliacs who weren’t told they could transmit HIV to their wives.
It’s very possible he had a positive HIV test at some point, and wasn’t told he needed to practice safe sex. So if he had an HIV test, and then transmitted to Jim anyway, it could be because he didn’t get counseled.
Freddie wasn’t “in denial” and there is no actual evidence that he ever had unprotected sex with anyone knowing he could transmit. He did, knowingly, engage in behavior he knew to be risky to himself.
I know of someone who developed AIDS several years ago, because her doctors missed all the early signs, and didn’t ask her about her sexual history, or that former boyfriend who used to share needles. She had unprotected sex with her current BF for a year, while not knowing she had HIV. Fortunately he didn’t get infected. Now she has unprotected sex with him because the drugs today are that bloody good. She’s become an HIV activist so that this doesn’t happen to other people.
I’m HIV neg, but also have a saga of doctors not asking me questions they should have. I belonged to a risk group. (Female partners of at risk men.) I had to identify this myself. No one helped me.
And probably Freddie did not get enough help either.
And there you have it.

Good one, Dysan! :D
@Galileo You make excellent points! I have only one comment. In Brazil, as early as 1984 there were State initiatives to bring awareness to the public about AIDS and in 1985 the Federal Government started campaigns. Maybe in the USA something similar might have happened. Freddie travelled the whole world during this period and spent a lot of his time in NY, so he should have been exposed to a lot of information about AIDS, even though in the UK the general public could have had access to information later on, as you described.
Cheers,

gilelio ...excellent post.
Deity...freddie was in NYC from around 1980 to 1983 and there wasn't much awareness of aids at that point. A lot of gay men thought it was the poppers they were using.
In the edition of the sun in 1986 when it was reported that Freddie had been for a test.....it referred to it as the 'gay plague. In 1988 Margaret Thatcher introduced Section 28 legislation banning the promotion of homosexuality in Britain's schools.......nice !!!! Now there are posters up in schools showing children there are different relationships , not just man and woman.
When the first adverts were shown in the UK in 1986 I remember feeling quite afraid , It came across as a terrible virus that we would all get and die off and I was only 13 at the time. . By this point it was already too late for Freddie .
