I know he only performed in the musical one time in 1988, but I don’t really know who he was in the show.

He played The Giant Head of the Timelords called Akash. He was billed as a hologram effect, but it wasn't, it was an old Disneyland Effect called "Projecting a face onto a bust" which doesn't sound as futuristic.
On all the other performances this character was played by Sir Laurence Olivier, it's was filmed in the hour of the day when he was mostly sober.

It was just before this show that Freddie broke up with his long term partner, his mustache.

The mustache would later plead to get back together with Freddie, but Freddie said no and refused to split the royalties.

Later Freddie went to show his mustache the beard he was working on, but the mustache was bitter about it. There's a Quote from a magazine interview around this time where he said "Freddie showed me, and i was like 'am i supposed to be impressed' you've covered your lip with someone who has tried to grow just like me."

The mustache was seen on Ernie Hudson for a while before retiring in 1993 after the Freddie Mercury tribute concert.

It rejoined Queen in 2017, now on the face of Roger Taylor.
