2 episodes into The Mandalorian and I'm liking it. First episode a bit meh but the second one much better.

The first half of the first episode was pretty boring, after we met the IG unit it was really great. I loved the second episode, I thought it was the best Star Wars since Disney bought Lucasfilm. Hopefully they won't mess up the 7th season of Clone Wars.

The bad thing however is the censorship and the cropping to 16:9. From what I understand they censored some of the more "problematic" things from their past (which is unforgivable for me), but not all (which is baffling to me) and what might be even worse - they are cropping old 4:3 shows to 16:9, mainly the Simpsons, completely ruining visual jokes.

I agree. A shame the IG unit was given such a weird voice and was given funny lines. It went from terrifying in Empire to basically a joke character. But I liked it the sequence alot and would like to see more of them in future. 4-Lom and Zuckuss would be amazing.

RE 16:9: the same happened with Friends but they were actually shot in widescreen so they didn't crop to 4:3. This caused other problems because you can see stuff like stand in actors delivering lines etc. Fascinating really.

And the Francis Ford* Coppola film Gardens of Stone. When the aspect ratio was changed for television there's a bloody great microphone hanging over one of the actors heads!

*not sure if he used the "Ford" bit for that film I read somewhere he omits his middle name if he dislikes the film.

I love stuff like that. Will check it out.

It's the scene where they're standing in a corridor outside someone's room. It completely took me out of the moment and I spent the rest of the movie looking for fur-covered microphones.

I think I have some 70s French films that are good for that

The full screen VHS of Batman Returns is the same, they unmatted the top and bottom instead of panning and scanning the widescreen image so you can see stunt men waiting for cue's and boom mics.

Buffy the vampire slayer blu-rays have the same issue as Friends, they opened up the Mattlines on the sides and you can see Boom mics and stand-ins

I wish they people doing these transfers would look into film making and understand how this stuff works instead of trying to make everything 16:9 by either cropping down the full screen picture or opening up the matted off areas.
