What are the best methods for recording concert audio?

I was wondering whether there are cheap devices or methods of recording concert audio without it becoming distorted? I've heard about blocking the standard microphone on a smartphone with a bit of cloth and some tape but how well does it work? Does anybody know or have any suggestions?

Back in the old days it used to be portable tape recorders, no tricks required.
