News of the World billboard on Sunset Strip. Note amended artwork of the crowd. Of these billboards I think 10CC and Marvin Gaye work best (i.e. most eye catching) whereas the Rod Stewart and Cher ones are just ridiculous.
I always liked how the bearded guy's in the front look like Dave Grohl from Foo Fighters!

To me, what's really interesting about this is the amended and expanded artwork. In the article it suggests the long-haired additions were an attempt to reflect the potential audience for the album. I never considered that the original artwork was dated or place-specific, but maybe southern California at that time had its own fashion milieu. Definitely people identify more with others who resemble them than they do with those who don't. Anyway, I think it's cool and I've never seen the amended art before.
ps is Roger's resemblance on the album artwork to Luke Skywalker a coincidence? Star wars was released before NotW.

This is a really cool find. Interesting to see what the billboards were like at that time.
I think Roger's outfit is based on what he was wearing in the shows at that time. You get a good idea when he comes out front for '39.

Was it released enough before to become a massive cultural phenomenon by the time Kelly Freas came to paint the picture?
I think it's a coincidence. Two blonde fellas drawn in a similar style
