i saw this a couple of yrs ago - it was part of a Sgt Pepper 50th Anniversary week.
. this guy is really good. i absolutely love his expertise and knowledge. the section on Penny Lane is simply stunning.
the 19th century Harmonium "Paul & John's magpie-like search for instrument colours that were unusual, half-forgotten and unexpected. and the Piccolo Trumpet from 1750!
Penny Lane has always been one of my favourite songs - my reasons have always been because of the intriguing elements above and below a great melody. however, this guy absolutely technically nails the reasons and wording them better than i ever could.
i think i've tried to put this argument to others before. but the genius of Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt Pepper and Abbey Rd is all about what was squeezed into FOUR tracks. 70s rock bands had 24 tracks to record onto. These Beatles albums used the bounce method - utter genius.
anyone want's a copy of this broadcast - i have it.
