As I was bored by Sultans of Swing, I used to think Dire Straits was rather ... dire
I disliked Crazy On You, so I wasn't crazy about Heart.
Joni Mitchell just seemed like a helpless one hit wonder, as I hated Help Me.
Does anyone else have a favoite artist that they once thought was meh?

Never was a Rush fan until recently.

Never cared for Metallica before, mostly cos I only knew Enter Sandman and Nothing Else Matters then. I became a convert when I heard Ride The Lightning and For Whom The Bell Tolls.
I only knew The Who cos of Elton John's cover of Pinball Wizard, and always that cover was superior to the original. I started to get interested when I heard Quadrophenia.

I used to think the Bee Gees was just some short lived Disco band until I stumbled across the album Still Waters

I used to think they're just another band trying to be The Beatles before I heard Nights on Broadway and their RnB era stuff.

I used the hate The Beatles, mostly because an old mate used to bang on and on about them and it bored me. But I found the light!
There's actually a number of big names I used to dislike, notably Bowie, Fleetwood Mac and REM, right down to Orbison and Elvis. Thankfully, I grew up.

I didn't get Yes at all for years. And then one day I listened to the Close To The Edge album, and it clicked - the arrangements, the musicality, the vibe. About ten listens later it entered my top ten albums of all time.
And it's still there.

I recall that I "always" liked Yes, but I still have poor taste in music ... I love the Drama album.
I regret not seeing Yes my freshman year of college in October 1980 for the Drama tour, but that was before I started going to see concerts occasionally. At that point, I had only been to one free concert to see Chicago at Chicagofest on the lakefront in the summer of '79.

Nonsense ! Drama is a fabulous album.

You might've been right with your first impressions of Dire Straits. Every time I hear Walk of Life it's impossible for me to tell if it's the original song or the audio of a drunk guy doing karaoke to it. Terrible.
Knopfler was a mean hand on guitar though. And his stuff for Princess Bride was chef's kiss.

Let me deviate a little from the rock direction everyone is heading in this thread. Here's a recent one from me.
I never used to notice Madonna until very recently. Her debut album is great, IMHO. Anything past that album I can't seem to bring myself to really like, although there are some 80s gems here and there. The rock music enthusiast in me might get all resentful.

Repeatedly so ignored until a certain point. Now in this way I find a lot of new music from the last century.
