It wasn't a sequencer live. Spike played the part live with an arpeggiator. This is a comparable example:

So even with a slight tempo variation it would only need to last a couple bars until the next chord change.

I played in a pro band, we used a Roland MC500 as a sequencws but our drummer needed a click to stay in time
