by the way does any one know if the DVD-A format is popular - is it here to stay?

i don't know if it's going to last long. But i know Queen takes a lot of time in releasing their DVD-A dvds.

Cd's are about 20 years old now, I'm very sure DVD-A's won't see a 10th celebration. So by the time Queen released 8 dvd-a's they came up with another format (Perhaps something smaller like a Minidisk?)

And Queen can start all over again with remastering, and fans can start all over again with buying

Super Audio CD is a format that was invented by Sony and is supposed to provide for better sound than usual CDs. Type "Super Audio CD" into your google search bar if you are interested in technical details.
I do not want any google ads here.

To answer the original question (I've gone on enough about timescales already),

I have REM - Automatic For The People & Metallica's Black album. Both sound fantastically clear.

The Eagles' Hotel California has also had good reviews, but I fancy getting Alice Cooper - Billion Dollar Babies. Not found any reviews of it yet though.

With my rather poor hearing, I could say that it is better then the original.

Not sure. But DVD-A is not tied directly to any manufacturer (as SACD is a Sony thing, like YV mentioned). Sony doesn't share too well (beta max, mini disc for example) so I would imagine that SACD will be limited in its ability to get more labels to release stuff on their format.

My bet is on DVD-A to outlast SACD, but that's just an opinion.

Is Black Album on DVD-A?

Here are some of the ones I have...

Eagles: Hotel California
Fleetwood Mac: Rumours
Metallica: Metallica (The Black Album)
Queensryche: Empire
and of course ANATO and The Game :)

I love this format... sound is superb.

SANTANA: ABRAXAS , great 5.1 mix!

NOTE: DVD-A's have besides the special DVD-Audio mix (in the folder audio_ts) also a DTS track in the video_ts folder.
So you can play them on any ordinary dvd-player, for SACD you need a special cd-player.
Seems to me that DVD-A has more chance of winning because people don't need to buy a new player but can use the dvd-player they already have.
And dvd-players cost as little as 50 dollars while SACD players are f*ck*n'expensive! :-)
