It waas good, but very, very sloppy. The scenes that he decided to omit and the new scenes he decided to add seemed to be odd choices indeed.

Yeah, from what I hear about it he did make some weird choices of what to cut out. Some pretty important stuff, right?
I'm guessing that even without said bits it was quite long enough so he had to cull somewhere.

I don't think that the average visitor (who didn't read the books) misses a lot of information. If you did read the book, wait for the extended version.
Although I still doubt Sarumans appearance and Wormtongues throwing of the Palantir, since Pippin just picked it up like that. It seems like nobody had seen it falling down.
